I got my first run of the week in this morning. 1 mile in 14:06, still with the walk/run ratio.

I was really proud of myself this morning because the buzzer went off before I felt tired! I’ve had several runs recently where trying to run for 1 minute, then walk for 2 minutes has still been really tiring and I barely made it to the buzzer. It’s a combination of not being as hydrated as I should have been, eating poorly, and just being out of shape. But today I felt like I could have kept going longer than 1 mile, if I had time. I wasn’t anywhere near as exhausted as I have been. So very happy with today’s results!

I still need to pick the date for my 5k, I was hoping for this weekend but the current forecast is 100* so maybe next week…

That’s awesome!! I’m so happy that you’ve found a happy place, not feeling like you want to die is a huge improvement :p

Are you still thinking of doing the first virtual 5k either this Saturday or next Saturday? I’m away this weekend, but I’m planning on doing it next Saturday if you want to be virtual running buddies :D

@10dedfish @nascfan Thanks pals! I’m hoping running a 5k in August (without walking) is a realistic goal because that’s what I’m aiming for!

    I think that’s very realistic.

Thank you! Yes, I think you know exactly how I feel because you hit the nail on the head! I have been feeling like I’m literally going to keel over and die LOL but not today! Now that I can comfortably walk/run 1 mile, I don’t know if I should be increasing run time and keep the same distance or increase distance and keep the same ratio? I do 1.5 miles on Fridays because I have more time.

Yes! Let’s be virtual running buddies! I considered this weekend but with the forecast I think next weekend would be better. So let’s do it “together” 6/24! I printed my bib already because I plan on wearing it :p I think it will help me feel like this is a real 5k and I can’t quit after 2 miles LOL

@Starbee … The rule of thumb is no more than a 10% increase in any given week. In my experience it is better to build your endurance first (time or distance). The first target should always be “finish the race” IMO, then work on speed.

There is no (or very very few) substitute for miles/time to build endurance to finish the race. There are many things you can do to improve pace.

@ridisneypinguy Yes at this stage I’m not trying to get my time down, but I am keeping track because I feel like I’m making progress by seeing my time go down, even by just 10 seconds. But that’s not my goal. My goal is endurance. I’m trying to work toward running 3.1 without walking any of it. My first 5k I was not concerned by time at all, and that’s why I don’t remember the seconds on my time LOL I just wanted to finish a 5k race. I did a mix of walk/run based on what I felt I could handle, no set times/ratios.

So what would you advise I do next? The plan I’m following says to increase the ratios, so it says I should be running 1.5 miles 2 min run/2 min walk this week. Fridays and Saturdays are the only days I have enough time to run 1.5 miles so I’ve been doing just 1 mile most days. With that in mind, would you suggest upping the ratio to 2 mins of each for 1 mile? Or would you increase distance and keep 1 min run/2 min walk?

@Starbee I would suggest consulting an established training plan. If you have completed one, find a new one that is slightly different, or more challenging. I have had great luck with Jenny Hadfield’s programs. She has very reasonable progressions, and the plans range from walk to experienced runner.

I use the log you run pro app for the iphone. it has a bunch of training programs from beginers to experts in just about every distance. Plus it records all your data so you can see your results. Also gives you reminders of the days trainig activity. Great app so far for me. Been using it for a few years. Another cool feature is you add your type of shoe your using and it keeps track of the milage on them.

That’s a great idea! I have no clue how many miles I’ve put on my shoes… :|

I know, I didn’t know how but now I do! How many miles before you change them?

Depends on the type of shoe. You could probably google the name/model and come up with something. I wear Hoka One One’s and I usually get about 600 miles per pair.

It’s week 5, day 2, and couch to 5k tricked me! Every week so far has been the same all week, and this week was not the case! Now I’m like
    null

    So today was:
    5 minute warmup
    8 minute run
    3 minute walk
    8 minute run
    5 minute cooldown

I thought I was only running for 5 minutes, like I did on Monday. Then I’m running and I pass 5 minutes, look at the timer, and I have over 2.5 minutes left :'( Holy cow!

    Final stats:
    31 minutes, 35 seconds
    2.063 miles
