The half marathon went very well this past Saturday (11/10). The morning temps were quite chilly. I believe it was around 29 degrees when the race started at 8:00am, but it was a full sun/blue sky kind of day so that helped some. I really wasn’t sure how things would go since I had run on Thursday leading up to the half marathon and my legs were still a little sore from that one. AND, I banged my right knee into our coffee table on Friday night. Ugh! However, those factors didn’t seem to have any negative impact on Saturday’s half. I was determined to start slowly and build to a comfortable pace. That strategy worked out well. The hills were brutal but I pushed through and felt strong through mile 10 and I thought I would be able to finish the run without having to take any walk breaks. Then, I encountered one final, evil, monstrous hill at mile 11. I made it halfway, but succumbed to the incline and had to walk the rest of the way to the top. Once I hit the crest I started to run again and was able to finish out the half with a time of 2 hours 15 minutes. My watch indicated that I had run a total of 13.9 miles and the race directors even state that the mileage for the course may not be exact. So, my overall time may have been a little better. All this to say, I was thrilled with how this run turned out. I have not run this kind of distance in over two years due to nagging injuries. Six weeks ago I was sure I would not be able to run more than 3-5 miles at a time ever again. This half marathon has boosted my confidence and I am considering another one in late April. Thanks @Nascfan for checking in on me after the race on Saturday. Your encouragement means more than you know! :)

@abeach Great job! Great pace! So proud of you for completing that half marathon!!! And I’m especially glad you have recovered enough from all those injuries to be able to do it! Late April for your next one eh? There’s one in Gettysburg in late April…just sayin…we’re likely signing up for that one ;)

Well it’s standard time again and that means, when it comes to weekly paced workouts, back on the DREADmill! :surprised: :apple:

The weekend distance runs (a.k.a. the runs that count toward monitoring actual progress) can still be done at home or wherever. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

That said, since my last update, Christy and I did a distance run at home on November 4th:

    Distance: 3.00 miles
    Time: 0:38:14
    Pace: 12’45″/mile

And another one in the foothills of Westfield, PA on November 11th. This one was with temps in the 20s, down a 400ft hill and then back up :surprised: Getting to the bottom was no big deal, but then turning around and seeing the steep road back up…well it might as well have been a wall! Still, Christy and I did amazingly well! We were shocked!

    Distance: 3.50 miles
    Time: 0:44:05
    Pace: 12’35″/mile

I want to do the Disney virtual race in January/February, I’m not sure how do you enter the information when you complete the miles, I never have done it before so I wondered if anyone on here has done a virtual race ?

@RocketEAR99 EEK! I’m so excited for you and proud of you for committing to running a full marathon!!! I did my first (and only) full during the Dopey Challenge in January! You have plenty of time to get your body prepared! I walk/run every distance I do. Even with finishing a marathon after 3 other days of running and the 2:30am wake ups, I managed to finish my full marathon below the 16 minute mile pace! So I have no doubt that you can pull it off! My advice is to find a training plan and stick with it! You can slowly build up your miles and pace a bit for now. I always follow the Jeff Galloway plans they have on the RunDisney site! They no longer fill in the dates on the training calendar. It just counts weeks for you. But they do have a full marathon plan on there. My longest training run ended up be 23 miles. Ryan and I both were done at that point and couldn’t bring ourselves to do our 26 mile training run a few weeks before our race. Many people try to push in too many extra miles, or their pace, or too many consecutive days. But at the end, we see countless people injured right before race day. So trust the training, but listen to your body. Some runs will be great, some runs will be okay and some will flat out suck! But those runs that suck will show you just how strong you are and what you are capable! But never sacrifice safety just to get a run in. I was in just bad pain during my last couple long training runs that I would end up walking the last couple of miles of it. One of them I full on walked the last 6 miles! I was so nervous about doing the actual marathon. But I found a food and steady pace. Kept to my walk/run routine. And took in the cheers from my fellow runners and the cheer squads on the course (of course having the bestest cheerleader ever @nascfan on the course truly helped). All of those things allowed me to finish feeling strong, uninjured and over the moon!!! I truly felt amazing after finishing my marathon! I am happy to provide any advice or suggestions you may need along the way! Oh! And as far as pacing goes. At Disney, the 16 minute/mile pace doesn’t start until the last person crosses the start line! So as long as you don’t end up at the back of the very last corral, you already have a time buffer built in! And the balloon ladies are the unofficial 16 minute/mile pacers. But the ones you must not see are the pacers on bicycles! They are the official hard sweep. If you fall behind them at certain points, then you will get swept/pulled from the course and bused to the finish line. You would still receive your marathon medal, but you won’t have crossed the finish line. I think on my super long training runs, I was usually averaging between a 14:30-15:15 minute/mile pace. At my Marathon completing my Dopey Challenge I pulled a 15:22 min/mile pace on my Garmin. But I clocked in 26.97 miles. My official Disney pace says a 15:49 min/mile pace because they calculate it off of 26.2 miles.
