@starbee Oh man, such horrible timing that you just got your orders! I don’t have any personal experience for massage with shin splints. I’m one of the weird people that doesn’t like massage or people touching me. I always feel ill and in tons of pain after a “relaxing massage”.

Thanks everyone!
I’m just an old guy trying to keep everything working. It’s a never ending battle!
June 27, 2018 at 10:53 am #81193Just received info about this in an email. 5K to benefit Give Kids the World Village. Can be onsite or virtual.

June 27, 2018 at 11:05 am #81198@starbee I’ve had a massage once and while it was great, it did nothing for my calf cramps or shin splints. I know some people who swear by them and maybe it works for them but it didn’t for me.
@10dedfish we’re getting old, dude! I notice all the time that certain things that never bothered me before are suddenly achey. We leave for the lake this afternoon and while I won’t be running, I am bringing my running shoes. I’m going to try to get some walks in early in the day. the hotel we’re staying at is on the boat ramp which is really steep so I figure it will also work in some cross training with the giant hill
June 27, 2018 at 11:12 am #81199@starbee – Back before kids I would get shin splints and nothing i did helped. Then I went to an orthopedist and got custom molded orthotics. I have never had shin splints since. And I’ve gained 30lbs since then with kids and such. I would recommend seeing an orthopedist and see if orthotics would help. (not the stuff from walmart – please, don’t do that to yourself)
June 27, 2018 at 12:03 pm #81218I agree on custom orthotics! Nothing generic and over the counter. We do a 3D scan of feet in our office, then send those off for custom orthotics created just for the patient. Ours are soft and flexible, yet give all proper support! I ran Dopey with them and I felt amazing!!
June 27, 2018 at 12:07 pm #81219I have fairly new Hoka On

e shoes, about 100 miles on them. Just getting broken in.I have noticed that my lower back is tight and sore after I run. I need to take a hard look at my form. I try to stand up and not lean forward when running. Hmmmm might need someone to video me…
June 27, 2018 at 12:12 pm #81220@10dedfish Ryan wore those for a bit and had to retire them. He started getting really bad blisters after less than 100 miles on the shoes. He felt his form was off as well. He thinks it’s because they are almost too soft and squishy. If the problem persists, you may need a different shoe. The design of the shoe and the squish may be putting you in an improper running position. I am an over pronator and finally got into a stability show last year. It made a world of difference and my knee and hip pain cleared out! Plus I run with custom orthocs to keep my feet level.
June 27, 2018 at 12:16 pm #81221@eeyorepoohfan that would be awesome, however right now I am stuck with these. I can’t afford to register for any races this year, let alone a different set of shoes. Heck, I’m considering selling one of the two race entries I have.
June 27, 2018 at 12:25 pm #81224@sarahjoe37 @bexruns @eeyorepoohfan Thanks for the input! I’m down to the wire right now so I’m willing to try anything. I am not allowed to wear orthotics during BMT and may not even be allowed to wear my own running shoes I’ve been running for 13 consecutive months and never had a problem, so I think my shoes and everything are great. I think what did it was me being stupid and pushing too hard. I know what not to do for the future, but for now I need to heal up.
June 27, 2018 at 12:40 pm #81227@10dedfish Oh bummer! I’m sorry to hear that! Does the place you bought your shoes from give you a test run period of time? I know some offer 30-90 day test runs. It’s the reason I buy Brooks.
@starbee That stinks they won’t allow orthotics and that you might not be able to wear your own shoes! That seems counter productive to me on their part! Heal up and praying for a speedy recovery!June 27, 2018 at 12:56 pm #81238@starbee – I suppose you’ll probably be doing a lot of running in boots! I know when my husband went through law enforcement academy they required running in his boots and gear. It’s a totally different story with all that on! Good luck and I hope you get the time you need.

I have noticed that my lower back is tight and sore after I run. I need to take a hard look at my form. I try to stand up and not lean forward when running. Hmmmm might need someone to video me…I was just thinking the same thing today! Tried running sprints after my run, but my feet felt different, as in not quite right, as they struck the ground. I’m going to recruit my son to video me next time
June 27, 2018 at 3:48 pm #81252First time I felt good during my run, in a loooong time! I’ve been partying way too much toward the end of the school year, and my belly was constantly letting me know. The lack of sleep and poor eating habits all around weren’t fueling me much either. Today I was reminded why I love running
4.5 miles
9:56/mileAdded in some sprints after my run was done. Couldn’t believe how good they felt.
I’m definitely going to continue doing them. Sometimes I feel like I hit a rut when I’m running. Hoping the sprints help me push past that.HEY!!! IT’S SUMMERTIME!!!!!
June 27, 2018 at 3:59 pm #81253Dang @missingwdw great job! You did fantastic! Excellent pace and you felt good and everything! Maybe I’m old, or just slow, but a sub 10 minute mile IS a sprint to me!
