Yesterday, I migrated *almost* everything to the new server. ???? Beep boop bop. All together it took about a day to do it. I hope you can see an improvement with speed and stability. Here is a run down of what’s new.

New server, Bagheera

Moved from a managed dedicated server to a root cloud server ????

What does this mean? D-COT was being hosted on a managed dedicated server for the past 5 years. A dedicated server means all the resources belong to D-COT. A managed server means that the web host takes are of all the server admin stuff (updates, security, etc).

A root server means D-COT takes on the responsibility of managing the box (upgrades, security, etc) which puts more on me, but allows me full control. The managed hosting was a great peace of mind knowing I did not have to worry about sysadmin things, but it caused a bottleneck when I needed to make some changes that a managed server didn’t allow.

More power ⚡

The new box has more power (CPU, RAM, SSD) and since it’s a cloud server I can increase anything at anytime without downtime. For example, if I think we need more RAM or CPU power, I can increase it with the switch of a button. ????⬅ **boop**.

Cache ????

I purchased a license for a very well-known plug-in that helps cache a lot of the resources used which helps with the site performance. I installed and configured this yesterday and I can already see the improvements from various speed test websites.

Some missing pieces

With the migration, I chose not to move over the activity history due to it’s insanely large size. The photos are not showing in member’s profiles and I can not figure out why. However, the data is there! It’s something I will take a look at later.

Next steps

After a month, if all goes well, I will decommission the older server and let this new one be our new home. Then, I will focus my efforts back to the D-COT Platform.

    The site is quite a bit faster. And, at least for me, there is no longer the need to refresh when something doesn’t fully load.

  2. my hubby moved his site to the cloud last year too…big improvement he says. thanks for all your hard work Steve on our little home away from home.

    • quick issue…spun the wheel and i got a 5 (no that’s not the problem…hee hee) but now it didn’t post on the main page or my page. it won’t let me re-spin so it must be somewhere out in the d-cot universe…
