Changes Coming Again to Up! A Great Bird Adventure

Last year, Disney’s Animal Kingdom debuted a new show in Asia. Formerly home to Flights of Wonder, the Caravan Stage now hosts UP! A Great Bird Adventure. Both shows had birds doing a variety of tricks. The current show does that but it incorporates Dug and Russel from the Pixar movie “Up!”. The show was not received well and would receive a rewrite of the script in only a few months. That version, the current version, wasn’t received well either, but it was received better than the original.

It appears that once again, UP! A Great Bird Adventure is being updated. Disney has announced that the show will be unavailable from September 8, 2019 to September 14, 2019 for updates. The details on these updates are scarce, of course, but it’s believed yet another script is being written. If this script isn’t received well either, the show could go in an entirely different direction.

Disney recently acquired 20th Century Fox, which includes a large selection of movies. Among these are Blue Sky Studios animation, which includes The Peanuts Movie, Ice Age, and Rio. Rio just so happens to be about birds and conservation. The main character, Blu, is a blue macaw and is the last male of his species. The film was a financial success as well and even received a sequel. Disney owns this movie now. It’s believed that if the third rewrite for UP! doesn’t go well, a new show will appear based on Rio.

How Rio could be implemented is unknown. Both Rio movies take place in South America, specifically Rio de Janero, as the name implies. This is not Asia, Asia being the land where the Caravan Stage is located. However, Up takes place mainly in South America yet the show still works due to the presence of the Wilderness Explorers from the film, so the Imagineers might be able to work Rio in somehow.

Personally, I don’t think slapping another IP to solve an IP problem is a good idea. Alas, we live in an era where the IPs have full priority, whether it’s needed or not. In the meantime, the wilderness must be explored! Caw caw, caw, roar!!! A Wilderness Explorer is friend to all, whether it be messenger, fish, or tiny mole.

  1. I haven’t been to Disney since this show was introduced so I haven’t seen it. I wonder why it hasn’t been received well? I did notice when looking at park hours that it was going down for a while.

    • Here’s my take on it:
The original show was super popular and hilarious. It used a lot of improv. The current show has characters who can’t speak outside of pre-recorded messages, so there’s much less flexibility for improv. And because of that, Dug and Russel often aren’t on-stage for when the birds are because they don’t have the words for it. The Up show also kept alluding to Kevin like he was gonna appear, but he never did. Now Kevin is seen around Discovery Island, but that wasn’t until very recently. The show ran for a year and there was no trace of Kevin anywhere. The bird stunts were still great, the only thing I think they did right with the show.

  2. this show has gone down hill…the Up version is not good at all. I was extremely disappointed. What kills me is the lady using a fake Indian accent…it was so bad and so fake it was hard to sit still and watch it. Cringe-worthy.

    • I only saw the original version and there was a white woman instead of Indian. I can only imagine a fake accent would be…yikes. I try to forget this show exists
