November 22, 2017 at 11:41 pm #56527@ferg That sounds like a fantastic new tradition! A wonderful way to honor and remember your daughter! And I’m sure it will be a healing time for her friends as well! We will be thinking and praying over your family tomorrow!
November 22, 2017 at 11:42 pm #56528@jloosh78 Thank you for serving your community and keeping them safe!! I’m sorry you will be away from your own family though.
November 22, 2017 at 11:50 pm #56529Every year is different for us. It’s just Ryan and myself. Our families are 6 and 10 hours away. We used to alternate holidays and drive to one family for Thanksgiving and the other for Christmas. It became stressful and crazy to do those drives at the holidays, especially to Phoenix. So we travel less frequently for holidays themselves. We’ve had a few years that Ryan’s parents have driven down for Thanksgiving. No matter where we are, I’m the one that usually cooks the meal! I enjoy cooking a big holiday meal since I normally just cook for 2! So I always cook a turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and yeast rolls. And don’t forget the homemade apple pie and bakery bought Pecan pie, topped with homemade whipped cream!!! We tend to take a post lunch waddle walk around the neighborhood. At some point over the long weekend we will get two trees up in our house (our first time putting up two!). We will have one Disney tree and one “other” tree! We’ve collected too many ornaments for just one tree apparently! Oh, and we always watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade while getting lunch ready.
November 22, 2017 at 11:59 pm #56530Okay well I HATE thanksgiving with a passion. Clean my house, have in laws fight over who gets to come and stay overnight, then cook for hours for a 15 minute meal and then hours of dishes? Stuck with company for days while dealing with hurt feelings of whichever inlaws didn’t get to come…no thank you. This year we said no thanksgiving and I couldn’t be happier. Having chicken on the grill tomorrow and finishing my trees.
November 23, 2017 at 12:45 am #56536Usually the apartment complex I live in has a big dinner but since I was the only one to help and bring something we’re not having it this year Everyone wants to eat but no one wants to help.
So no big dinner for me but I did splurge and bought a great big cheesecake. Love me some cheesecake.
November 23, 2017 at 7:13 am #56537@eeyorepoohfan I can’t wait to see your trees!
@jamiedawn27 I’m so sorry it’s been so stressful for you. I think you found a good solution though, just you and your immediate family. I hope you have a wonderful day.November 23, 2017 at 10:11 am #56547I do need to get my other tree out and do my mini Disney tree! Feels like I am missing lots of ornaments so I need to track them down.
November 23, 2017 at 1:53 pm #56570I’ll never forget Thanksgiving 2012.
It was my first time away from home, in an area I knew nothing about. I didn’t know anyone other than the rest of the guys on base. I was only a week removed from Boot Camp.
Instead of making me spend Thanksgiving alone, a local family opened their home to me. For one day I was part of their family.
I don’t think they knew how much that tiny gesture meant to me.

@backsideofwater This will be one of my friends who shipped out November 7! Which branch did you serve in? I’m Air Force, just enlistedNovember 23, 2017 at 9:29 pm #56598Okay well I HATE thanksgiving with a passion. Girl, I feel your pain. I’m proud of you for putting your foot down and cancelling Thanksgiving! I want to and every year I tell myself that I will but I never do. I tried this year but things didn’t go well. I won’t get into it but it was the same old. Maybe next year I’ll just leave town for the holiday…
November 23, 2017 at 9:34 pm #56599I won’t be all doom and gloom and kill this thread with my Thanksgiving drama! I’ll just say that our “tradition” ever since we got married has been giving in to my mother in law
To keep this light, I will just say that while I didn’t enjoy a large chunk of today, I am thankful for the following this year:
A Disney trip with my parents and younger brother
No medical issues like last year
No tax issues like last year
My beautiful Leia who I adopted this spring
My enlistment in the Oklahoma Air National GuardHappy Thanksgiving!

Navy. I was in San Diego on that Thanksgiving
November 24, 2017 at 10:25 pm #56646@starbee I feel your pain. my in-laws are upset and taking it personally that they weren’t invited this year. my hubby is baffled. i said “see this is what happens when we invite them every year! they take it for granted and don’t make any effort to go to the other two kids.” he finally sees it and agrees. I hate Thanksgiving. I would love to go on a trip instead – i have one friend who beat the drama by taking her family to Colorado to go skiing and a friend at work who spent Thanksgiving at DW! A trip is totally doable.
