The topic came up the other day. I was talking with my wife, kinda reviewing our current life situation, and what the next few years may bring. I was mentioning that most of the things I loved to do with my free time, I never do anymore. Mostly because there is no such thing as ‘free time’.

I am seriously contemplating selling-off most of my ‘hobby’ items. If it is not being used, at what point is it just clutter, and holding onto hope to do stuff I may not have the time for again (or at least a long time), only for it to deteriorate with the time? Then, taking the proceeds and turning them into ‘Disney time’ (runDisney entry, DVC, etc.)… With changes coming in our future, I don’t foresee much ‘free time’ or ‘spare money’, so to utilize my limited time and satisfy my Disney addiction, why not?

Anyway… This now has me thinking… What is Disney worth to you?

What would you give up for more ‘Disney time’?… Hobbies? Dining out? Starbucks? What is the sacrifice you would (and realistically could) make to be part of the ‘World?

money. Because to enter the gates you are required to pay for a ticket.

That is obvious… But what are you willing to give up for that money… That is the question. What is something that you enjoy, or what is something you’d be willing to give up, to make Disney happen?

For example. I love fishing. I love fly fishing. But I haven’t taken my boat out of my yard in over a year, and I haven’t used my (expensive) saltwater fly fishing setup in at least 4 years. I love the activities. I hope to have the opportunity to use these again. But, I’m considering giving them up to contribute to the Disney fund.

Great question! I’m curious to see what people say!

I always loved concerts. Although I haven’t been since JT in 2013 I think. But that’s mostly because of the kids (and money – they’ve become so expensive!)
We live close so we don’t really have the expense with traveling to disney.

Hmm… that’s tough because as much as I love Disney, I can’t bring myself to sacrifice fully in order to take more frequent trips. Right now our finances only allow us to go every other year. I’ve thought about cutting back on eating out, buying coffee (I go to a local place over Starbucks), buying less stuff (I love clothes, purses and shoes), and maybe skipping fun things I like to do such as comic conventions and concerts. If I cut ALL of that out, and I mean ALL of it, we could probably go to Disney every year. But, I just can’t stay home and have no fun 51 weeks of the year for the sake of 1 week at Disney. I LOVE Disney, don’t get me wrong! But there’s just no way I could skip every lunch with a friend, movie date night with my husband, coffee with my mom, all year round for a Disney trip. I need some entertainment little and often to tide me over until my next trip to the World.

But, my situation is different to yours. I don’t really have anything like you do that I’m not using that I could part with. I don’t have an expensive hobby I could maybe exchange for a trip. I never took up those things in the first place so that I could focus on saving for Disney trips. For example, I’ve wanted to do Krav Maga for years. I did Tae Kwon Do as a kid and loved it, and I really wanted to get back in to martial arts. I searched every school around where I live and the cheapest was $100/month. So that was a no, because over the course of a year that’s a lot of money taken away from my Disney fund!

I have a fidget spinner I don’t use often. I don’t see what the big rage about those toys are…

I have about 15000 Magic the Gathering cards worth about $5000. If someone offered that or more, I would sell them as bulk. I have had many people offer me for certain cards, but not the whole stack.

So since my sister moved to Orlando 1.5 years ago, we have to make it happen to get out there at least 2-3 times a year guaranteed now. We had AP’s for a year or so before that. We really do cut back in general in our lives. We honestly just buy necessities and don’t have too many frills in life. We buy new clothes when they are needed (thankfully neither of us are just “fun” shoppers). We only go to the movies a couple of times a year. We try to limit our eating out as well. Back at our old rental, we would have annual garage sales to make a little extra Disney money from getting rid of stuff we don’t need anymore. Our new house rental doesn’t allow garage sales. So there goes that. We cut out cable about 7 years ago so we could start traveling more. We have older vehicles that are in great repair (Toyota’s, they last forever) so we have no car payments and maintenance is low. We intentionally set aside a set amount from our paychecks each week and it goes into our savings account right away, then we aren’t as tempted to use it. We give up weekend getaways just to make sure we can keep going to Disney. We own our own business, so vacations are absolutely crucial for us. And we honestly love vacationing at WDW! We constantly talk about it, look at rates and keep booking trips! For us, we would really sacrifice even more if we needed to. The hard thing for us is that when we close our business for vacation, we make ZERO income. So it’s really a fine balance! I would be willing to give up more if we needed to. But thankfully, we are currently in a position that we can afford our current vacation schedule. We have talked about dropping to POP Century once all of the room refurbs are done to save money if we need to. But we will discuss that more once it comes closer. I’m a bit addicted to Riverside right now. ;)

Starbee, whether you realize it or not, you are sacrificing something. You are not taking up Krav Maga because that would take away from Disney, so in that respect you are giving something up.
It’s hard to say for us, we are in a different stage of our lives than many here. Our daughter is raised and married so we don’t have the expense of children anymore. We are now at the point in our lives that we really don’t give up anything for Disney. We come from humble beginnings and have always lived beneath our means and that has continued into this stage so that we don’t have to give anything up. That being said, I would say in the past we gave up more expensive vacations to other locales for Disney. We could never afford to go every year like a lot of people, in fact, when we started as a family it was every three or four years. We still took vacations in other years, just more cheaper vacations. We’ve never been to places like Cancun or Europe or Hawaii for example. We also drove a lot until we could afford to fly. So in that respect I guess you could say we gave up some luxury for Disney. I will say this, one thing we have been giving up, birthday cards. Those things are in the neighborhood of $5 – $6 now! Unless it’s for a small child, no birthday card from us, and those we’ll pick up on the 99 cent rack! We know that in the course of just a few birthdays for people, we can buy our mug or meals or other items.

As for me (and my part in my marriage), we’re currently getting serious about buying a house which should be our last big financial debt since we paid off both our cars and most of our student loans. So that house is my most major spending priority. After that I value vacation time far more than buying something else to own, so I’m always willing to pour some more “spare change” into vacations, especially Disney vacations since our DVC contracts will last until I’m 74!

I do give up spending on other leisure items for Disney, and since material gifts mean very little to me, I’d also prefer some Disney gift cards to any other gift much of the time :ears:

I agree! It is frustrating for family members who do not understand, but I try to explain, if they feel the need to give a gift, that is one I would find the most enjoyment in.

We are in a similar situation as far as trying to prepare to purchase a new home, plus I will need to replace my car in the next two years or so. Two big expenses. Now add that the city is bringing sewers into our neighborhood, that adds an expense against our will. Our usual source of vacation funds has now has been repurposed.

I would sell all my Disney purses if it meant I could go to WDW lol, I have worked overtime just to pay towards our vacation :)
