Who’s going? What are you running? how do you plan your park visits around this? what other pieces of information or comments please share!
August 9, 2017 at 7:48 pm #43565Are you going? I am a 2x vet of WDWMWknd… 2014 10k & 1/2 finisher, and 2016 Dopey Challenge finisher. How may I be of service?
August 9, 2017 at 8:03 pm #43573My hubby, sister and myself are participating in the Dopey Challenge! Since we are Annual Passholders and go a few times a year, we plan to stay low key for that week. We will hit up parks after each race, but not run around like crazy since we will have 4 days of early wake ups! This is my first WDW Marathon race weekend, but not my first WDW race. @RIDisneyPinGuy will be a great resource for this specific weekend. But if you have other race weekend questions, I’m happy to help too!
August 9, 2017 at 8:14 pm #43574We’re going! I am head cheerleader in charge for @eeyorepoohfan! My wife and I will unfortunately not make it down in time for the 5k due to work restraints but we will be cheering her on for each of the other three races! I can’t offer tips as this will be our first race weekend and will rely on Heather for whatever and how much she wants and is able to do. This is all for and all about her. Of course, my wife and I will have some “date nights” in a park when they have to be in bed by 8:00!
August 9, 2017 at 8:56 pm #43576@nascfan I have a feeling that by the last couple of races, Ryan and I will be in bed before 8pm!! Thank you for being our cheerleaders!!!!!
August 9, 2017 at 9:02 pm #43577Haha! No worries, you guys go to bed whenever you need! We will just be thrilled to be there with you!

I hit ‘the wall’ about 9pm each night, but still struggled to get to sleep, if memory serves me right.
August 10, 2017 at 6:41 am #43589@Croaker – We visited the parks every day, except for Marathon Sunday (we went to DTD to shop/walk). It is essential to go to the parks, IMO. The walking aids in recovery, and helps bring normalcy to a very abnormal day.
Do not over-plan your park days. No FP before 11am, take your time getting to/from attractions, sit for a minute if you need to. Enjoy taking in the sights and sounds. Hydrate. Eat well.
You may want to consider altering your meals. A large brunch & a reasonable (clean) dinner. Before your race, resort food courts open early. There are grab & go foods available- or pack oatmeal, english muffins, PB, etc. in single-serve portions for race day (don’t forget disposable bowls for the oatmeal).
Try to be in bed early. Try to sleep. DO get up early enough… Catch as early a bus as you can for the race. Security backs up quick, and the corrals fill quick. Try to be in the front of your corrals and establish position, if you get caught in the ‘herd’ it will bog you down and could be outright dangerous.Post questions as the come, and I’ll try to add more tidbits later!
August 10, 2017 at 12:16 pm #43723this will be my third! last year we were rained out but the first time we went we ran the 1/2 by mistake and it was the start of our running!

We usually hit our wall just after eating dinner! We usually mosey back to our room to start stretching out around 8pm or so. We don’t usually sleep well. The only time we slept well before a race was at Disneyland for the Avenger’s half! We both managed to get 6 hours of sleep! Usually we get 2-3 with the excitement! I’m really hoping that we will be tuckered out from so many early wake ups, especially since our home time is 2 hours behind FL time!
August 10, 2017 at 4:13 pm #43765Agreed on no early FP’s! We honestly take our time after a race and usually don’t even get into a park until after 12pm or so! So we usually book FP’s for after 1-2pm if possible. We eat bigger lunches and simple clean dinners (chicken and rice is a good one for me personally). We always walk the parks after races, but we really take our time! We do get to the bus stop at least 30 minutes before the last bus suggestion time they give. This seems to work well for us. We don’t usually hit too bad of a backup getting through security or to our corrals. There will be lines for photo opps with characters before the corrals. When I did Dark Side this year, they actually had wait times posted for the characters in the pre-race area! They also had them again at the post race area as well. Not sure if they will do this for marathon weekend or not. Dark Side was the first I had seen or heard them doing this. Don’t underestimate the lines for the porta pots! They will be long! I think I waited about 20 minutes at Dark Side. But I was in the 2nd to last corral, so I had plenty of time! I had a much better proof of time that I submitted for Dopey in January, so I should be up a few corrals. Are you running the half marathon? May I ask I you ran the 1/2 by mistake?! Did you register for the wrong race? Or show up to the wrong race? That sounds like quite the adventure!
