For some reason, I don’t believe the ToT will close for ‘further Star Wars expansion’. Star Wars Land will be alllllllllll the way on the other side of the park. That just doesn’t make sense to me logically.

Right?! I hope that proves this is just a rumor!

I’m still in denial over the gondolas. So ridiculous! That just cannot be happening! I’m also excited for the new Star Wars land and I hope it doesn’t take too long. Kinda annoyed that closed that section of the park for over a year before doing anything with it. But what did we expect after how long Pandora took? :p

I hope they look at the Guardians of the Galaxy version in Disneyland and decide that the marginal increase in attendance is not worth it. I hope they leave well enough alone on this one. ToT has a long line already most of the time. Put that money into creating a new ride or focus on another park please….

The line for ToT at Disneyland was always long and FP were gone by midday. So the popularity of a ride, really has nothing to do with this decision IMO.

And even with all the b*tching and moaning, you know the line for GotG will be long and people will love it. If i were to believe any rumor about WDW ToT it would be that eventually it will follow the west coasts version, if anything.

But they don’t just look at the attendance. How much does it increase themed merchandise in the gift shop at the exit? They look at that too.

Okay, we can go with that… I can’t see it performing any worse than staples such as Space Mountain, Soarin’, Expedition Everest, BTMRR, etc. I would feel even safer to assume it out performs Rockin’Rollercoaster… Guardians will have more short-term pull, but when the movies become stale in a few years, will it have the dedicated-fan pull ToT does? Doubt it. So now we perpetuate a cycle of every 5-7 years needing a significant re-theme.

My fear is that the Iger regime is going to only look at the short-term and make another knee-jerk change. My hope is, there are enough people in the company with the sensibility and long-term vision to curb this from becoming a parks-wide, company-wide business philosophy.

You really think GotG will become stale? I just see it growing since the MCU is HUGE now.

You’re right, it doesn’t. They make changes when they think it’s needed, there have been plenty of popular attractions that still get tinkered with, which is sad.

I agree, there seems to be many short-term decisions, and that just scratches the surface of what’s wrong. I agree with you!

Absolutely. I do not see 15, 20, 30 year staying power with the franchise.

The Twilight Zone sees a notable amount of airtime 50+ years after initial release. ToT is still popular and relevant and impressive to guests 20+ years later. Some of the most iconic, high-demand, and joy-inducing rides are in their 30’s and 40’s now… No. I do not see GotG hitting those benchmarks.

I think what @RIDisneyPinGuy is getting at is, not every attraction has to be themed to what’s currently popular in order to be a success. Tower of Terror has a huge draw, numerous loyal fans (I mean look at all the extra merch they released when fans asked for it), and although it has a movie, it’s not a big franchise like GotG. To keep adding movie overlays to attractions removes the originality of the attraction, may or may not even work (Stitch’s Great Escape), runs the risk of alienating those who don’t like the franchise, and also risks the franchise dying out and no longer being popular, thus killing something that would have remained popular all on its own. I think it’s a little dangerous to keep wanting to take the approach that every attraction should have ties to what’s popular, plus, bringing movies into rides at a theme park is Universal’s thing (“Ride the movies”). Disney will lose some of what makes them unique if they appear to be acting like Universal as they move forward.

I’m with y’all, that would be ridiculous to remove ToT! It does seem like the wrong location for something Star Wars, it would ruin Sunset Blvd, and while Star Wars is popular, if they make the park almost entirely SW they’re going to alienate people who aren’t SW fans.

As for GotG, this is one instance where I am SO GLAD for Universal having the theme park rights to Marvel on the East Coast and I hope that helps keep a Guardians overhaul of ToT/Universe of Energy at bay!

I concur and hope you are right! It would just be silly to change TOT to SW.
SW is getting its own section of the park. Idk why it would need to be anywhere else..

I got a good laugh from your bus drivers comment! LOL

Absolutely true. The odd thing is that most of the attractions that have had the staying power at WDW have not been based on films at all (though some have had films based on them).

At MK, Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Carousel of Progress, Pirates of the Caribbean, TTA Peoplemover, and “it’s a small world” all fit that mold.

At EC, that goes for every popular attraction except the new Frozen ride (and I doubt that will be as popular in 10 years).

At HS, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster fits the mold, though being based of a movie or multiple movies or TV shows was what they were going for in that park.

At AK, Kilimanjaro Safari, Expedition Everest.

One could also argue that with attractions like Splash Mountain and Dinosaur, it’s not really the films they’re based on that make them popular, but the uniqueness of the attraction itself.

@disneybug, thanks! I aim to please! The bus drivers know everything of course. ;)
