I thought Universal had full rights to Marvel in FL?

If you remember, there is a Star Lord and Baby Groot meet and greet in DHS. Still unsure on HOW that happened

I know EPCOT and WDW aren’t museums, but there is something that keeps you coming back when there’s consistency. They should keep the characters out of World Showcase, they don’t belong there. Soon enough, all the countries in World Showcase are going to sell the same Disney merch as they do in every other store throughout WDW… what fun is that?

Why wouldn’t they put the Inside Out characters where Body Wars used to be! That entire pavilion is just used for seminars and selling Cutco knives now, which they can use that location in between Canada and UK for! They already ruined Figment twice with the past remodels, I guess they just want to kill him along with the Dream Finder.

Such a shame! This is why Universal still stinks. If it wasn’t for them and Harry Potter, none of this would happen….

@SEJ101 & @JAMIEDAWN27 Universal has the rights to only specific Marvel franchises. The characters from Guardians of the Galaxy are not one of them, which is why Disney hopped on that bandwagon so quickly. And they are allowed to have them in the parks because of this loophole.

@DizLuvrKAli now THAT makes sense! I forgot about the GoTG meet and greet…so at least they have some room to do different thing than just Star Wars everywhere (not that my hubby minds)

Completely agree with everything you said, @disneybug!! I want to see as much of the countries in World Showcase as possible, not movie tie-ins! I understand country-related character merchandise being sold in the shops and character meet and greets, but I hope the attractions at the pavilions stay (mostly) country-related, not character driven. The countries and culture are what makes WS so special and unique from other WDW parks!

I know it’s ancient in Disney time, but I would be so sad to see Illuminations go! Although admittedly, I said the same thing about Wishes and was blown away by Happily Ever After. Maybe I would be pleasantly surprised again? :D

The update to The Seas pavilion looks awesome! And since it already has a Nemo tie-in, it seems like it would be a great fit. And I totally agree that it’s time for big changes to UoE. While it holds a ton of nostalgia for me, it’s not exactly a “must do” attraction on my trips anymore. I’ll be glad to see something new there if for no other reason than to draw some of the crowds away from Soarin’ and Test Track.

I think the bulk of these updates look great, but I draw the line at Living with the Land! :surprised: I love everything about that ride, all the way down to its cheesy 1980s film clips with (possibly) outdated farming methods and scientists who look like they walked straight out of a classic Weird Al Yankovic music video. Disney, please don’t touch Living with the Land!

I think Spaceship Earth should incorporate something from Horizons and use the ride vehicle touch screens to interact with the attraction while descending. Just think, you can choose desert, undersea, or space.

i don’t mind them changing Ellen” Energy Adventure, but I don’t want them to mess with Living with the Land I love it. They can change Imagination as long as they keep Figment. I love him. I’m ok with them changing the Seas. That ride is a little boring.

As far as Figment goes, I hope they keep him, but I wonder, would children would confuse Figment with Bing Bong from Inside Out? They have similar color schemes and silhouettes.

Unpopular Opinion: I think it is important to bring some characters and character attractions to the world showcase. I can remember being bored out of my mind as a child in the World Showcase. I wanted to do things not just look at things and watch films while still standing up. I now love the culture and authentic experience of the Showcase but I think character and movie tie-ins will help children maintain their interest in the pavilions and give them a way to contextualize what they are experiencing.

@sej101 and @jamiedawn27 and anyone else wondering about Marvel characters in Disney parks, I found this little excerpt from an article, the full one which I will link to in order to give site credit:
“Universal Orlando owns the rights to Marvel usage for all areas East of the Mississippi River for any property they are currently using. Per the contract:

    East of The Mississippi – any other theme park is limited to using characters not currently being used by MCA at the time such other license is granted. [For purpose of this subsection and subsection iv, a character is “being used by MCA” if (x) it or another character of the same “family” (e.g., any member of THE FANTASTIC FOUR, THE AVENGERS or villains associated with a hero being used) is more than an incidental element of an attraction, is presented as a costumed character, or is more than an incidental element of the theming of a retail store or food facility;

Universal Orlando currently has 4 attractions in use based on properties from The Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four.

Due to this verbiage, Disney cannot install any attraction with these families for use in Orlando. The utilization of those 4 “families” includes a lot of characters in the Marvel Universe, specifically the “big ticket” characters – such as Wolverine, Spidey (obviously), and Iron Man. In addition, Universal Studios Japan features a Spider-Man ride clone, so Tokyo Disney cannot utilize Spider-Man.

Other than that – Disney is free to use Marvel in any Disney park they wish.”

A very interesting article to say the least.
