We were in WDW last week (week of 8/17 through 8/25) and I cannot tell you how crowded the entire resort was – especially MK. I had a full-on panic attack one night during “Happily Ever After” fireworks. The hub was wall-to-wall people and when I looked down Main Street, the THICK crowd continued ALL THE WAY DOWN! It was CRAZY!! We usually go the last week of August, so I’m wondering if that has something to do with the crowds (meaning, this time we went the week before the last week). Does that make that much of a difference?

Also, I have to ask you southerners… HOW in the WORLD do you stand that heat?!?! Good lord!!! Being a New England girl, it’s like I was doing the death walk every time I walked around world showcase or, honestly, even just out to our rental car!! Geesh!!! :-)

We were there the week of 8/9 thru 8/16 and, the crowds were definitely higher than late August/September but, it seemed mostly manageable. Our most crowded park day was MK on Tuesday (8/15) and we were pretty surprised by that. We figured that the weekend would have been the busiest since it was the last weekend before FL school started that Monday.

And, you are so right that it was very hot and very humid. I live in the big fat middle of Texas and I swear I sweated more on this past WDW trip than ever before in my life! :p LOL

    1. We don’t stand the heat. We bring fans and cooling towels to help bear with it. :fire:
    2. Me being a local and what not, I would know that last week or two of August is ALWAYS the most crowded because everybody, not just Florida, is going back to school and everybody wants to get one more trip in before summer ends. Yes, Connie’s trip was during Florida school beginnings, but the sound of your trip is every school’s beginning. ;)

I’m gonna go out on a limb and just assume because it was end of summer, everyone is getting their last minute trips in. Maybe vacation packages were cheaper for then? Who knows. DL crowds have been lower lately, however because this is a race weekend our crowds will probably be massive.

The Happily Ever After fireworks were insane just because it’s new. I’ve never seen anything like that, the pictures of how packed the hub is are unbelievable! As for crowds that time of year, hard to say. August is typically pretty busy with kids from many states out of school for summer as well as international guests. Having said that, we’ve been experiencing ridiculous crowds in October. We’d been going in October for years and found the crowd levels very favorable but after the introduction of FastPass+ and My Disney Experience that all changed. Crowds have been unbearable and we’ve even had trouble booking our home DVC resort 10 months out! I guess it’s true what they say, no slow time at Disney any more.

Piggybacking on what @starbee said, Happily Ever After is a completely different animal than Wishes was. Due to all the projections, you need to be in the hub or in some spot in front of the castle to get the full impact of the show.

And the heat is brutal, that’s why we live for our mid-day breaks and hitting up rides like CoP :)

LOL you get used to it I guess. I’m from Oklahoma where our summer days are in the 90’s and even break the 100’s. The hottest day I ever remember experiencing was 115*. Doesn’t mean you don’t get hot, but I guess we’re just used to feeling like we’re going to spontaneously combust every time we step outside :p when I walk around WS I typically duck in somewhere for some A/C every couple of countries. One year the humidity was killing me so I sat through two showings of the American Adventure LOL

Mid-day breaks, mid-day breaks, mid-day breaks. There’s several reasons they have extended hours in the summer, and the heat and humidity are a couple of them. Parks from rope drop until lunch or just after, a good three to four our break in the a/c or pool, then return refreshed for the evening while everyone else is dragging themselves and their children out of the park.

I will gladly take the heat over shovelling 3 feet of snow! I’m not a big crowd person which is why I will never spend Christmas or any other major holiday at the parks again. I try to find the slowest times and yank my kids from school. Yup I’m one of those parents!! LOL

That’s basically how I feel. Yeah sometimes I’m way too hot, but I’m one of those people who prefers to be too hot over too cold. I couldn’t survive in a state where it’s still cold/snowing in Spring!

I live in SC and refuse to go to WDW between April and October! I would much rather be cold instead of hot. I made the mistake of going Memorial Day weekend one year because someone gave us free passes that had to be used up within 2 weeks so my Dad and I rode down. We made it to about 2pm at AK one day and we were just sitting and suffering on a bench until we looked at each other and said, “let’s just go.” We hated it! Heat can suck the fun out of anything for me and my family. We like it cold! I was also one of those people that planned my vacations around Winter and always when there was no school holidays. I took my step sons out of school and never had an issue. I remember when my sister was still in jr high they considered a Disney trip educational and didn’t count the absences against her as long as she wrote a report. Those were the days! I feel for ya going in August. That to me is like saying, “Hey we’re planning a trip through Hell!” lol Nope…not this girl! I’ll be there in November, December and January this year! woohoo!!! :)
