Some bad news for all you Spidy lovers as Sony and Disney fail to reach an agreement
https://io9.gizmodo.com/spider-man-will-no-longer-be-shared-by-marvel-and-sony-1837416155
August 21, 2019 at 4:52 am #115351I know this is a family-friendly page, so I can’t REALLY say how I feel about the matter, but…
That was not cool.
August 21, 2019 at 7:46 am #115354I haven’t seen the new one yet, but i really liked this version of Spidey. i find this very sad, and greedy. its not like they aren’t making a ton of money anyway. just make an agreement so we can keep seeing Spidey with all our other Marvel friends
August 21, 2019 at 8:51 am #115356i was super annoyed…no disney movie reward credit for the spider-man movie.
August 21, 2019 at 8:53 am #115357If it adds any silver lining to the situation, i believe Marvel (prior to Disney) sold the rights to Spiderman, X-Men and Fantastic 4 in the late 90s to other vendors to raise funds, as they where in financial trouble. So if they had not sold this, there may no longer have been a Marvel Studios for Disney to buy. Not sure if that makes its any easier to swallow?

August 21, 2019 at 7:19 pm #115369So what does this mean for the Spider-Man movies already underway? I’m confused
August 21, 2019 at 7:50 pm #115372I am too @starbee. In fact this whole thing confuses me. I thought Spiderman was a Marvel character from the beginning? I just don’t get all of it.
August 21, 2019 at 8:18 pm #115375August 22, 2019 at 3:03 am #115377Spiderman ended up in the strange situation that his movie rights where sold (along with X-MEN and Fantastic 4) in the late 90s to raise cash for a stricken Marvel Studios. When they buyout by Disney happened around 2010 they where negotiating to buy back the movie rights, as well as the deals Marvel had done with Universal. No one wanted to activate the buy out, so although the creative rights for all characters belongs to Marvel and therefor Disney, the right to use them in Movies sits with the original buyers, Universal, FOX and Sony. So to this day Disney can’t use their own characters in Movies and they’re restricted on which Marvel Characters they can use within the parks with proximity to Universal Studios properties. e.g. no Spiderman, because Universal has the Spiderman rides.

August 22, 2019 at 8:03 am #115380No problem, I believe the deal around that parks is a lot more free on DL than it is on WDW. Which lets Disney use more characters on the east coast than on the west. Also i think the deal only remains in place as long as Universals Marvel Attractions and character use remain active, so if Universal stop using a property such as Spiderman, it releases it back to use by Disney. Its really confusing haha
August 22, 2019 at 8:38 am #115381This is more based on what I’ve heard, rather than read, but when it comes to film rights in a situation like this (Disney owns Marvel, but other studios own certain characters), if a studio doesn’t release anything using those characters within a certain time span (a matter of years), they may default on their rights to the character since Disney owns Marvel as a whole. So if Sony does not use Spider-man in any media under their name for a certain number of years, they may default and it becomes easy for Disney to pick him up. The problem with this is that sometimes this results in sub-par movies being released just for the sake of retention and a quick buck.
August 22, 2019 at 8:58 am #115383Exactly! @RocketEAR99 hence Andrew Garfield’s Spiderman & Michael B Jordan’s Fantastic 4 movies

Kinda glad I’m not on their legal team I think their contract restricts East Coast use only within Disney’s theme parks
