Disney Expands Environmental Commitment By Reducing Plastic Waste

Personally, this makes me SUPER happy. We are a household that *mostly* only uses straws we own. In fact, I have one in my purse now (when I remember to switch it over) to use and decline the ones I get at say Starbucks, fast food places, etc.

    Thoughts?

Only a win, as far as I’m concerned! There could be some sanitary concerns with the in-room stuff, I’d suppose, kind of like what I’ve heard regarding Disney and their moves regarding toiletries.

I’ve always felt bad using straws, and especially stirrers. This would be a great way to move away from that. Glad to see Disney making these moves — and I hope they prove economically viable and truly environmentally sound, not just good from a veneer PR standpoint.

I am definitely an advocate for reduction of waste! Sometimes I can annoy people I’m sure, but really, why do we buy so much packaging! We just came back from Dallas and both the museum we went to and the zoo do not provide bags in their gift shops. And just about everywhere I went there were recycling bins. I loved it! You would have to search pretty hard to find a recycling bin in any public place in my entire state. (South Dakota)

I love that they are actively working in the Parks and other places to reduce waste and keep clean.

Sounds like a reasonable move. I wonder if this means we’ll see more paper straws or just no straws at all. We’ve re-used most of shopping bags and shampoo/soap bottles we’ve gotten from Disney because their plastic bags were substantially strong and those shampoos and soaps are pretty amazing too :)

If they can do all they’re saying AND reduce costs or even keep the cost difference negligible in the process it sounds like a huge win.

Disney has always been very conservation conscious and this just affirms that. From the solar arrays, including the largest hidden Mickey in the world I think right now, to biofuels in their buses and everything in between, good on ya Disney!  from me!

I do not like the feel of the paper straws in my mouth… I don’t know… I’m just weird like that. I usually get the free paper cups of water at the quick service restaurants. Good thing I don’t drink soda in the parks… and that WINE doesn’t need a straw :mint: :minnie:

@acamm I don’t like them either, which is why I have my own thick plastic re-usable straw. Like @sarahjoe37 said, I’m sure it gets annoying (and I save plastic bags I get from ANYWHERE to resuse as well) but I want to reduce the amount of waste I contribute.
A lot of restaurants here (I live in Southern California for those of you who don’t know) and we passed a law a year or so ago about stores only having re-usable bags (they cost 10 cents) or you have to bring your own AND a lot of restaurants (not fast food joints) wont give you a straw anymore unless you ask.

So does this mean I’ll have to bring my own reusable totes when I do my souvenir shopping at Disney Parks? I think it’s great that Disney is being environmentally conscious, I’ve always thought highly of how they’ve changed things up at Animal Kingdom in order to protect the animals. But I’m with @ACamm paper straws are so gross to me and I won’t use them. I’m not sure what the refillable bathroom items are going to look like. I’ll miss taking all my travel sized items home :(
