Hi everyone! I’ve never started one of these before so here goes…
I’m bringing my little guy to WDW for the first time in a few months – we’re so excited! I’ve been there a million times, but never with a child! We know we are going to the Magic Kingdom on the first day (of course), but my question is – what should we actually DO first? Where do we start? I want to give him some time to take it all in but would love some suggestions of what you think would be a great way to start our day.
    Thanks for your help!

Hi @kw746 ! I read this post, and immediately thought of the first time that I brought my kids (now aged 21 and 14) to WDW. They were 10 and 3 at the time, and it was the BEST TRIP EVER to see Disney through their eyes! You are going to have such an amazing time.

    How old is your son?

I would suggest that you could take him to meet Mickey Mouse when you arrive to kick off your visit in a HUGE way! https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/entertainment/magic-kingdom/character-meet-mickey-mouse-town-square/ :ears:

How old is he/will he be on your trip? That might help get you started on suggestions

Yes, I was about to ask the same thing. Age plays a huge role in our suggestions. You will LOVE IT!

Oh yes age info would be helpful lol! He will be just over 4 when we go, and I want more than anything for him to have a great first experience so he loves Disney as much as his Mama! I like the idea of the Mickey meet and greet!

Oh 4 is awesome! He’s going to have so much fun! And so will you!

Dumbo has to be considered a right of passage so I would certainly make sure you do that. Early is of course better as later the line can back up, but then you’ve got the play area now if you so desire. Anyway, you don’t have to do that first, but certainly make sure you do it.

i would stick to magic kingdom and maybe animal kingdom (if he likes zoos). i would ignore epcot and hs.
be prepared for dumbo, carousel, tea cups, magic carpets, winnie the pooh, buzz, speedway (which he won’t be able to drive), characters and low key shows. expect that based on his size/fear factor you will skip many things that you are probably interested in (the mountains). bring a change of clothes cuz if he likes water he won’t be able to resist the dumbo splash area and plan to go back after lunch for a nap/relaxing time or you will have a meltdown.

buy him an autograph book and plan on characters (unless he is scared of them…it happens). you might want to get the photo pass if he is big on characters. plan on amazement at little things like flattened pennies (bring change).

The autograph book is a great idea! My kids were all about that when they were little. And of course, meeting the characters.
Have fun! I love hearing about first timers visits!

I guess it depends on your son, what is he looking forward to the most? Does he want to meet Mickey, or go on some fun rides? I feel like Dumbo is a great place to start, the lines are usually manageable, and if not, there’s the play area inside to keep them occupied. It’s a classic attraction where the kids get to control the ride vehicle, so that’s always fun for them! And it’s a nice way to ease into the rides

My Godson was 4 when he took his first trip to the World last June. He LOVED it! He was all about the characters (especially the princesses! That heartbreaker! ;)) so I echo other D-Cotter’s suggestion on the autograph book. Jamie’s suggestion that you might want to get the Memory Maker package was good too, that will save you a ton on buying pictures and you’ll have all those special memories from his first trip!

In terms of rides, my Godson loved Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and his favorite ride was the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Thanks so much, everyone! Funny how I completely forgot about rides like Dumbo – what a classic, but not something I felt like I had to do as an adult :) I think we might start our day in Storybook Circus then head to the more daring rides from there. He’s a little daredevil so I want to hit the more tame rides earlier in the day! I really appreciate everyone’s input! :)
