I was raised on Sunday nights, Mary Poppins, and DLR. My first trip to DLR was 1966. Disney has always been a part of my family since I can remember

Before VCR’s and DVD’s it was such a treat to go see a Disney movie and see The Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights. That magic I felt as a child still sticks with me today. It is truly the same Magic that I feel today when visiting WDW. So the heartfelt love of the Magic that Walt Disney tapped into, made it blossom and shared with us has me hooked.

Like most of you, I grew up on Disney shows and movies. Heck, I had the old “Mousercise” record! (it’s still in my room, collecting dust)

My first time going to a Disney park was in 1982 or 1983, so I was either six or seven (depending on the year). Can’t recall what year, but it was three months before Epcot officially opened. The “Spaceship Earth” was visible, but you couldn’t go in.

I was hooked. I loved it.

My family has been taking Walt Disney World trips at least once a year for about a decade now, only in the last year or so have I become well and fully obsessed with everything Disney. I love the immersion and the attention to detail found in every corner of the parks, I’m hooked for life now.

I was a lucky child in that I got to go every year from age 5 to 17. Most of the trips were off property (I remember the budget motel) and not much experience with resorts or dining except in the parks. I went a couple of times as an adult, however, a couple of years after my wife and I got married we took a trip to WDW with our kids, my parents, my brother and my sister. We had a great time even though we stayed at a time share just off property. I was hooked because of my childhood and relished in the memories that were made with my brother (sister came along much later) but even still …I wanted more. I would say that I became fully hooked when my wife and I took a trip in 2011 sanz kiddos. I was heading off for military language school and leaving the kiddos and my wife with family while I concentrated on my studies (visited them every month which was a plus). We decided to take a trip somewhere together before I left. I found extremely cheap airfare to Orlando and it didn’t take any persuasion for either of us to go back to WDW.

We utilized my FIL’s timeshare again and stayed just off property, however, we were having the time of our lives leisurely strolling through the parks without the kids in tow. Now, don’t get me wrong here, I love our family vacations to WDW with the kids! This is where things took an enormous turn…..we were in MGM when we came across a stand for DVC. After the promise of free ice cream, fast pass tickets and the thought of being a part of something Disney I convinced my wife to go on the tour and look into joining. She didn’t really want to go on the tour because she is very frugal and the thought of spending more money than we already have on Disney trips was not to her liking.

After we viewed some of the resorts and sat down with our guide we were given all the information to mull over. I was not quite convinced as the sticker shock was enough to sway my interest, although not completely. It was my wife who made the 180 and was sold on the deal. I knew that it had benefits and the payoff in the long run would be worth it but I was still hesitant. She was not hesitant at all and wanted to join very badly. So…….we joined! We were officially DVC members owning our little slice of heaven at SSR. We moved out of our condo off property in the middle of our trip and stayed a couple nights at BLT and BCV. We have both been hooked like no one has ever been hooked since and have made a few trips back since! We have also become DVC owners at the Poly as well as this has been my favorite resort property since I was a child. Looking forward to our next trip in May

This is a photo of us right after checking into our room at BLT after becoming DVC members!

I think I am older then many of you – I began my Obsession with “Uncle” Walt on Sunday nights sneak previewing the attractions of Disneyland (which we watch in Black and white). When I was 11(49 years ago!) we went across country and spent a couple of days in Disneyland. We repeated this each trip to the west coast. In 1977 my parents and I travelled to WDW or as it was then The Magic Kingdom only. The minute I walked under the railroad I knew I had found “home”. I got to visit a couple of other times but in 1990 I visited with my husband. We stayed off property, but my husband was lucky enough to have met Michael Graves the architect of the Swanphin and loved his work. They had just opened and we bit the bullet and moved there for one night, the Boardwalk nor the Y & B had been built – you took a tram! Swanphin has been our “home” ever since. Yes, I have stayed on Property and will again, but the Swanphin makes my DH happy and as he is just Disney Tolerant I must keep him happy.
So many of my happiest memories are wrapped up in Disneyworld – taking all 4 of our parents on a few trips, my 50th birthday weekend with my closest friends and dinner at V&A, taking my Mom to the Flower and Garden festival a few times before she passed, and all my trips to Food and Wine where I have met so many wonderful Disneys (as my DH calls us). WDW has enhanced my life in so many ways. I smile there so much more then anywhere else, I have learned about making retail fun and magical, and I have learned that to stay young you MUST be young at heart. So there is my story…Oh and WDW lead me here a community I treasure as a safe, fun and supportive place.

As a kid my parents kept me away from Disney (my theory is they didn’t want my begging to go to the parks is to make sure I didn’t know they even exist). Growing up I told myself I never wanted to go as a way of justifying never getting to go. When some friends of mine literaly drug me there kicking and screaming I built up a wall to keep myself from having fun. Simply talking to a Cast Member in Epcot got me to drop the wall. The exact moment I got hooked was standing in the central hub of the Magic Kingdom, looking up at the castle in the bright Florida sun, with the Main Street band playing the Mickey Mouse Club march in the background. It was total sensory overload. It was then I knew I had to come back.
