Mary Poppins always is and always has been my favorite Disney movie. Ask my mom how many times I watched it as a kid. So I’m super excited but VERY worried they’re going to botch it.

Every piece of film that Disney releases from this film makes me more excited to see this film. Emily Blunt sounds excellent and this is not the first time she’s done a musical. Then there is Lin Manuel of Hamilton fame. And it all looks spot on. Plus – Dick Van Dyke!

Just saw it. So much going through my mind. I am a Poppin Tot. I grew up with a movie that on a scale from 1-10, could not fit on the scale. Trying to sequel such a movie I fear is nigh impossible. In truth, comparing this release to the first could quite possibly be totally unfair. That being said, it is a sequel.

First things first…. Did I like it. ……. Yes. As a stand alone film, is it good. ….. Yes. But to me, it does fit on the scale of 1-10 and that does say a lot, especially since this film is not a 10, or even a 9.

The sets were amazing. I felt like I was back on Cherry Tree Lane. Dick Van Dyke was incredible, and he wasn’t on screen long enough. Emily is a fine Mary Poppins, but she just didn’t have that brilliance that Julie brought to the character. Will this film be a classic? It has the Disney brand, and it has the original influence, but I just do not think it will soar like the original.

Am I being over critical because of the sacred territory this film treads? Maybe, because of where this film treads, I should be highly critical, or maybe I am just being unfair to expect the same childlike amazement the first granted me.

So in the end I think I will just like the movie as a movie, and leave my roots in the original. After all, once a Poppin Tot, always a Poppin Tot. It is worth the price of admission and I hope when you watch, you will Trip the Light Fantastic.
