    Hello everyone,
I wanted to start a weekly discussion thread where I poise a topic with a question and open it up to discuss both sides.
Pros or Cons, In favor of or hate it, did it belong or was it a flop? However you feel about it… Let’s Discuss Both Sides!

    Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat Icon : A Quick History… :sorcerer:
Built in front of The Great Movie Ride, the Sorcerer’s Hat debuted on September 28, 2001 as part of the 100 Years of Magic celebration at Walt Disney World Resort. During the celebration, interactive kiosks were installed underneath the Sorcerer’s Hat where guests could learn about Walt Disney’s life and career.
The original plan was for the hat to be built outside of the park, be constructed at twice the height, with two Ferris wheels as ears, and Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream underneath. The plans were changed when the retail side of the park decided to fund it, reposition it at the center of the park, and repurpose it as a pin trading station.
Removing the Sorcerer’s Hat was an idea the company thought about when trying to find a way to attract a bigger audience. Although the hat brought together the magical, beneficent energy of Disney itself, several people thought the design and placement was never a good idea. Many fans complained about its obscuring design, hiding the park’s replica Chinese Theatre located directly behind the structure.

SO! Were you in favor of the hat as it stood becoming the new icon of the park? (Merchandise and media suggested that it was.)
    OR
Did you despise it like so many did?
How did you see it? Do you wish they had moved it to another location after taking it down in 2015?
    Let’s Discuss Both Sides….

The first time I ever went to Studios was during the Hat Era. I do like the view of the Chinese Theater but the Studios just kinda of seems …off without it.

As for putting it somewhere else, I don’t see anywhere it would fit in. Maybe Downtown Disney before the reimagining to Disney Springs.

What about outside of the park where it supposedly was planned to be built?

For me, it only looked good at night with all the lights lit up on it. The Chinese Theater didn’t have that “wow” lighting” so it was nice to see something you simply could not ignore pop right out into the night!
However, being a former cast member of the Great Movie Ride, there was a constant annoyance that I felt with the hat. Not only did it cover up the ride and former Icon of the park… but all it was during 2008 was kiosks and a character meet and greet location. Not worth the placement or constructing, in my opinion.

    I hated the hat passionately.

I liked the Earful Tower as a symbol of MGM, and maybe I’m biased because I remember before MGM existed, the Earful Tower was the original. The Earful Tower made more sense thematically. What does a sorcerer’s hat have to do with making movies?

Absolutely nothing! Ha! My issue with it, is IF they erected the hat during the transition from MGM to Hollywood and then as the park got more into entertainment and thrill instead of movies and behind the scenes effects… then I would understand. At least a little bit more. But they built it during the MGM years, when the park was still strong on film representation.
Up to Sept 2001, they still had…

    Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!
    Star Tours
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure
    Muppet*Vision 3D
Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage
    Voyage of the Little Mermaid
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
    Fantasmic!
    Sounds Dangerous with Drew Carey
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith
Disney’s Stars and Motor Cars Parade
Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage!
    Walt Disney Presents
The Magic of Disney Animation Tour
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – Play it!
    and The Studio Backlot Tour

Attractions/parades that had SOMETHING to do with movies or TV.
SO WHAT DID THE HAT REPRESENT? I get it.. 100 years of magic… but the studios?? That’s more of a Magic Kingdom thing.

Agreed  movierider, out side of the park entrance/entrance plaza would have been much better fit. I get a little peeved when something like this happens, the imaginers work countless hour setting up sight lines and story continuity then they just plop something down that interrupts that. Beyond that, it seems like once something is there it is hard to get rid of it, even if it was meant to be “temporary.” Can’t say I could figure out where it could go at the MK, certainly not in front of Cinderella Castle!

RIGHT?? They wouldn’t dream of putting it in front of the castle. I guess it was fair to say they didn’t see the Chinese Theater in the same way.

Alright, the Sorcerer’s hat for the last 10+ years I really had fun times, however it was time for the Grauman’s Chinese theater back to it’s glory days. The 100 Years of Magic was also part of Walt Disney’s 100th Birthday that’s a fact too.

I didn’t like the hat

As others have said, I don’t think it really belonged where it was. It didn’t fit in with the theme of Hollywood Studios, the Earful Tower was a much better icon in my opinion, and the hat really disrupted the vista of Hollywood Blvd.

Thank you for sharing the history of the hat! While I think Ferris wheels would’ve looked gaudy, if the hat had been located in Disney Springs for example and served the originally intended purpose, I think it would have worked better.

The hat, as much as I hated it, at least was not as bad as the Birthday Cake Castle or the Magic Wand Spaceship Earth. LOL LOL Don’t get me started on those!

    Who could! :surprised:

Gotta wonder sometimes, who in the heck greenlights some of this stuff. A feeling I often get looking at recent merch offerings!

In the beginning, there was the Castle……

When you watch Disneyland, Secrets Stories and Magic, they talk about how Walt wanted a conspicuous castle. They didn’t realize it back then but they were talking about park Icons. Of all the parks, the Studios Icon has been less conspicuous. The Earful Tower sits back off the side. The Sorcerers hat was in the center, like the castle, the tree of life, spaceship earth.

Personally, I prefer an icon that is a centerpiece. Something that when you enter a park, you are drawn to the center by the icon. It is part of draw. More then any other park, Studios has chantged. The icon is just one more thing of change. The removal of the hat back to the Earful Tower, if I had to guess, is temporary. I think something will happen and be called the icon in the future.

I would say the Hat was more of an icon be definition, but I agree, it wasnt truly representative of what the park stood for.

the hat eventually grew on me. I did sort of miss it when it was gone, but totally agree the theater is the roots of the place and should be then focal point. Plus its pretty ;)
