It’s a nice way to encourage STEM for the kids, especially for young ladies who love Disney magic.
December 23, 2017 at 12:22 pm #60184Not to hijack or get political but, can you allow me a quick rant??? While an opportunity to peek behind the Disney curtain is about the coolest thing ever, the idea that girls need a program separate from boys to break into the programming field just really chaps me. I’m a girl. I have been for 44 years and I’ve been programming since middle school in the mid-80s. When I started my career as a programmer in the mid-90s, it never occurred to me to count the men vs women in the department but there were some of both. I went into programming because it’s the only thing I wanted to do and because I’m pretty friggin’ fantastic at it. Closing a perceived “gender-gap” is just not a good enough reason to choose a career path. Why would anyone encourage girls to do that to themselves? Do what you were born for – what you’re wired for – what you’re great at – and the world will be better for it.
December 23, 2017 at 3:40 pm #60201The first half of my sentence was inclusive, but the article was aimed for young ladies who are interested in math, science, and coding.
I think everyone should be into STEM; the world would be a smarter, cooler place.
December 24, 2017 at 10:36 am #60253Oh goodness, Chuck, I’m sorry! ???? My little rant wasn’t toward you at all, I promise. I became familiar with the Girls Who Code program a few months ago when I heard it was offered here in our school district and the more I read about it and it’s origin and mission, the more it bothered me. So, I apologize for jumping right into my crazy like that. There is nothing at all upsetting about your comment and posting of the article or the fact that a group of kids got to see super secret Disney stuff. I personally love programming and math and science and all that and I’m all for encouraging an interest in those things. I just don’t see how separating girls and boys in order to do so is helpful at all since girls who code in a girls only environment will possibly go on to become women who want to code in a coed world. And as one of those women, I don’t see how isolating girls improves their learning or in any way better prepares them for life and career.
Again, my apologies. I will take my crazy back to FB where it belongs. ????
December 24, 2017 at 12:47 pm #60259Ha ha ha…”crazy back to fb”. @connie96 I totally got where u were coming from. I am about as anti-feminist as a person can be. A person should be judged by their ability and not given an extra hand or incentive based on gender (or race or religion…). I agree, the program is cool…all kids would benefit from stronger math and science and there shouldn’t be some special program for girls only!
December 24, 2017 at 12:54 pm #60260I agree with these two
December 24, 2017 at 4:14 pm #60290@jamiedawn27, I hear ya. As women (as humans!), I think we should do a better job of supporting each other as individuals instead of lumping folks into groups. Pretty much anytime you hear anything in the media reporting any characteristic or tendency or statistic about “women”, it’s a safe bet that I’m cringing at it. I am a woman but, according to the things I hear, I am certainly not “women”. But, I think I’ll let it go at that. I really love our little politic-free corner of the internet here so I have to apologize to everyone for letting my opinions get away from me there for a minute. I’m ok now.
December 24, 2017 at 4:55 pm #60292@connie96 yes, let it go!

bexruns374 XPI do love that they have this program and all but like @connie96 and @jamiedawn27 I don’t really LOVE the idea that its just all of a sudden “hey lets do this for girls too!” What? How about just making sure these programs are available for everyone all the time? Yes?
