it really depends on how long you would be looking at staying for your once a year trip, what time of year, and if you had a resort in mind that you would prefer to stay at as to whether or not it would be cost effective. That will dictate how many points you need and therefore your buy in and annual dues

That helps. I usually go for almost a week in October. I guess I will just have to waltz over and talk to the nice DVC people. :ears:

@DisneyJean plus if you do a tour thingy you get a free icecream! LOL anything free in Disney is for me! If you go any DVC site you can basicaly figure out the different seasons and point totals required for each day. It really is a good deal for a larger room with a kitchen.

Free ice cream! I’m there. I might like a kitchen. Even though I am there for the F & W fest. usually, breakfast, left overs and snacks for later are always good. :dole: :coffee: :mint: :mint: :mint: :mbar:

We have looked into buying at DVC a couple times. The last time my husband looked at the annual fees and made a chart with the assumed increase per year. When you forecast it out to the end of the 20 years of owning it the amount was SO insane he just said “no way”.

We took it out 50 yEARS for the life of the contract and it saves us ~50% overall. It does depend on the resort you buy into and the cost of your membership. We own at Saratoga Springs and the Poly. The Poly is top tier in cost so the savings aren’t as high, however, the points we have at Saratoga is providing a huge savings!!!

@disneyjean When we did the tour it was really convenient. We had a fancy car take us from DHS (picked us up backstage) to Saratoga Springs where they had model rooms we could view and we sat down in a DVC Rep’s office to look at points charts and stuff. At the end of the tour we got our free ice cream and the car drove us back to our resort. It took around 2 hours overall. I would say though that like any sales person, expect them to call you about 2 days later and then once a week for the next couple weeks if you don’t sign up there and then. That’s what happened to us

I would not have expected them to call you at all, all naivety aside. The presentation for us was not pushy and our guide was very professional. Basically, either you want it or you don’t. If you don’t then we will give you some free ice cream, some fast passes and a ride back to anywhere you want to go no strings attached. Maybe it depends on who is assigned to you.

@Mr.TomMorrow They weren’t pushy, we enjoyed our tour and liked our rep. We were back home 2 days later, he said he wouldn’t call while we were still at the World. I wasn’t able to answer his call so I guess maybe that’s why he called back another couple of times. Or he had targets to meet that month, I have no idea :p he left VMs but I didn’t return his calls because we weren’t going to move ahead. They were selling AKL and GF at the time, we had no interest in either. We did it for the ice cream! :surprised:

My parents bought our first 100 points, so I wasn’t there for that sale, but when they asked me to consider joining their contract and adding on 50 points, I got the tour. They were selling at AKL pretty much exclusively at the time (I don’t think they sold as quickly as they were hoping at that resort since they were still selling there for a number of years after that).

Anyway, I enjoyed our conversation and the run through of the program. At no point did I feel rushed or pushed, in fact I felt rather comfortable. I thought that was a rather refreshing and clever sales tactic of theirs :smirk: But anyway, our agent hid nothing about costs or financing or dues. He broke down our no-nonsense monthly cost for us and at the end I was ready to sign on. Then came the ice cream, fastpasses and the private ride to wherever we went from there (I don’t recall where we were headed afterward). :mickey:

It all turned out exactly as explained. I have absolutely no regrets about joining and if I had the cash to spare, I’d be delighted to go through it all and add on again and again.

Would Florida resident pricing on tickets be too much to ask for DVC members?

@DisneyJean – Definitely go to the tour for the free ice cream and Fast Passes. Just keep in mind that if you want prime location for Food and Wine, you’ll want to consider Boardwalk Villas or Beach Club Villas via resale instead of buying direct (since they’ll likely be selling Polynesian, Aulani, and Copper Creek Villas at Wilderness Lodge). Outside of the home resort, where you actually own & you get 11 month booking priority, you have to wait until 7 months out to book. Boardwalk and Beach Club will both fill up quickly, with little availability at 7 months out during Food and Wine.

That being said, we own at the Polynesian, and are super happy with our decision. I’ve been looking at buying DVC for a couple of years, but never discussed it in any detail with my wife. On one of our last trips, we took a tour, and that gave us a chance to actually discuss. I’d done the research, but my wife is the accountant. Literally. She is an accountant for a living. She ran the numbers, and we ended up buying.

@Mr.TomMorrow – They do give you the Gold Annual Pass at the same price as Florida Residents. I know that only helps if you go enough to justify the Annual Pass, but it’s better than nothing.

Yes if you didn’t buy your membership direct from Disney LOL seriously though, I think DVC members should get better rates, closer to what FL residents get

I wouldn’t mind having just the flexibility of a monthly payment that they offer to FL residents for APs. It would be easier to digest than the several hundred per pass in a single payment.

Anyone else on here a little miffed that the slogan “Welcome home” is not exclusive to DVC? Not a big deal, however, this used to be a ‘perk’ if you will and a few years back they opened it up to the entire resort. Just something that went the way of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride (for WDW at least).

I’m very late to this post but I would like to share our experiences. We actually bought resale Old Key West before they changed some of the benefit rules. We love the fact that we can stay at resorts that would otherwise be way out of our price range. We have been fortunate to have enough points that we’re not usually worried about borrowing, but recently we had an experience where we wanted to cancel a night of a reservation as well as book a last minute night. (Saying farewell to Ellen and Great Movie Ride) Somehow it was showing that we had to borrow a bunch of points on their end but we were seeing enough points from the website. Long and confusing story later, it was fixed but not without finding out that banked points were not allocated correctly so they wouldn’t be able to be used. The cast member was great and helpful but I still don’t understand why it has to be so complicated. Since we used our 11 month window and planned our trips ahead we were actually going to get screwed out of our excess banked points. Next time we bank points we now have to call them to reallocate them to already made reservations.

We really have enjoyed our membership though. We like the home feel with at least a partial kitchen, limited housekeeping services, and free access to laundry. We have our favorite places (mine is the Boardwalk), and we are working our way through all of the DVC options.

Last I’ll leave a little extra suggestion/tip. We spent the money on the purple box and absolutely love it. It’s worth it to not have to worry about toiletries, ponchos, sunscreen in the winter, over the counter medicine, condiments and snacks etc. DVC members still get a discount I believe and the service has more than paid for itself. How much time and extra money wasted buying what you inevitably forgot is gone now and your packing list is much less! I have a list of everything in the box with expiration dates for items that comes home with me so that I can replenish anything in between trips. Highly recommended looking into it! :)

We have been DVC members for almost 20 years now. We bought in shortly after our Granddaughter was born and have had many wonderful trips with her and with the Kids. We’ve stayed at almost all of the resorts through DVC and have enjoyed most of them, but we have our favorites. We’ve been lucky enough to get Club Level at Jamba House on a few different trips. We’ve enjoyed Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge the most. But the main thing is the great times we have had and the memories that these trips have given us. We’ve also spent time at the DVC resorts at Hilton Head and at Vero Beach. Both are excellent resorts with a lot of great staff. We really wouldn’t trade those trips for anything and are still glad we joined, even though now most of our trips are resort only stays. (Parks just too expensive and crowded for old folks to really enjoy at that price point). No matter what these are first class hotels.
