The other day I got on a kick of reading and watching videos of River Country. I remember very vaguely enjoying the sandy-bottomed man-made beach and the various bridges, etc. (But I was never much of a swimmer. Far more a wader!) And I remembered visits to Discovery Island! How cool was it?!
I remember the experience of walking into the lobby of the Poly… as the monorails glided past overhead… the waterfalls gushing down from the peak rising skyward — a magnificently tall edifice for a three-foot-tall youngling! And realizing that I was truly in a whole new world, and ready to go exploring!
I remember Delta Dreamflight and “prepare for supersonic flight” (absolutely mesmerizing!), and riding the Skyway cable cars (how peaceful and quietly terrifying when I thought of how far down it was!), and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I remember Spectromagic () as a wee tike!
I remember the excitement of seeing the Cafe from The Rocketeer, and watching the hustle and bustle of MGM Studios, and of exploring the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids area.
The Electric Umbrella (I wished *I* had an umbrella with all those cool lights on it!), the lights embedded in the concrete walkways, BODY WARS! And the second floor of the Imagination Pavilion. And, my favorite ( ), Tapestry of Nations. All from trips in the mid to late 90s.
And I know that plenty of you reach back further than that! What are some of your earliest memories of WDW? What was just the COOLEST stuff?!
(Disclaimer: How about starting a DLP thread for your earliest Disneyland memories? I’d love to hear those, too!)

StupidJudy71 XPThe monorail!! I just had a flash of sitting on the monorail at the end of our two day visit and just being soooo sad to leave! I remember the area outside Pirates of the Caribbean, I think there was a fountain in the courtyard back then, trying on those giant sombreros for pictures. I remember Pinocchio walking around and signing my autograph book, pictures with both Mickey and Minnie when you could find them walking around hand in hand and didn’t have to go to a specific area or line up to give them a hug. I also remember those tall dolls that used to walk around World Showcase, I have a photo someplace! In the 80s when dayglo was so in style we’d love the dark rides because we would glow in the dark in our fluorescent sweatshirts. Those are just a few memories!
April 26, 2017 at 6:47 pm #24218Mine are of DLR and The Mine Train. For the most part my memories are also tied to WWoD. I loved watching Walt in the parks on TV
Just go to youtube and search for titles like, Disneyland goes to the World Fair, Disney after Dark etc

xxzazzzxx17 XPI remember the whole Wonder of life pavilion and riding the skyway cable car! Also, as a kid I looooved the Aladdin restaurant in MGM (Hollywood Studios) ! I also remember how much I freaked on the suprise drop in pirates of the Caribbean ( I was five and not a huge fan of trill ride so for it was A HUUUUUGGEEEEE drop hahah! )
April 27, 2017 at 8:14 am #24289My earliest memories take me way back to a time of hyper colors and big hair with god aweful outfits! Yup the 80’s! seeing and smelling the sights and sounds of the original poly will forever be embeaded in my mind. Riding the giant Tortoises at Discovery Island was also a big one. When MGM first openend and Catastrophe canyon was legit! The backlot tour that actually had sights. The Roger Rabbit area and the computer photos with characters from the movie. The Dip mobile!!! Tool time merch that said more power!
That crazy addicting song from the original Mexico pavilian ride! But walking out of the train station rounding that small turn and seeing the castle and hearing the sounds and smelling the smells of mainstreet are the best! 20,000 LUDS was so cool back then. So to where the Hydrolators from the living seas. I’m also pretty sure that Magic journeys made me feel like what it must have felt like to be tripping balls!! The skyway was a favorite. My grandfather and little cousin getting picked to play Johnny Carson and Little joey from Bonanza at the since retired Superstar TV attraction at MGM So funny!! I know I’m forgetting quite a few things but this is the tip of the iceberg that has gotten me to the Disney freak that I am today. Great Thread Mr. Timekeeper!April 27, 2017 at 8:52 am #24303
StupidJudy71 XPOMG @jloosh78 Magic Journeys! I remember jumping out of my seat when the witch ( I think?) would have lightning coming out of her fingers!
And, Hydrolators!!!

I still have my first Figment (and Shamu, from that other place) from 1986 .

RIDisneyPinGuy182 XPI remember the tram and monorail rides. I remember being embarrassed when Minnie Mouse tried dancing with me and kissed me on the cheek. Riding SSE with my dad and being amazed and excited. Loving the dinosaurs in the original Universe of Energy. The Living Seas was out of this world with the diver presentation, and the deep-sea suit you could climb in and work the arms of. I wanted to make my home like Living with the Land. I remember waiting for Magical Journeys, and the music of the pre-show (the D-CoT track still stirs-up a flood of bittersweet emotion).
Lastly, I remember crying as we left. I was so afraid I’d never get to see WDW again.
May 13, 2017 at 9:16 pm #27107I remember riding the Skyway and how awesome it was to overlook the Magic Kingdom! I remember Peter Pan’s Flight and how I enjoyed seeing my handstamp for park re-entry under the blacklight. I vividly remember the Wonders of Life Pavilion: Cranium Command and Body Wars as well as the bikes @PA_Timekeeper mentioned. I remember wondering if there really were people inside my head controlling things like Buzzy I remember how real SoundSations felt at MGM Studios and seeing behind the scenes stuff on the Backlot Tour. Those are probably my earliest memories. I also recall even at a young age how much it hurt to leave WDW and how long it felt until I returned.

Unklecleetus0 XPGrowing up in Miami it was just a second nature thing going to Disney World all the time. My earliest memory was when I was maybe 6 or 7, going on Horizons and in fact learning what a Horizon was. That and and older friend travelling with us finding a wheel chair and balancing on two wheels in it.
June 26, 2017 at 5:06 pm #35542I didn’t get to go to WDW until I was 24. My best memory of that trip is talking to a Cast Member in Epcot named Roger. He got me to drop the wall I built around myself and start having fun
