Will you stop going if nothing changes

Purely hypothetical: if the "new normal" becomes the permanent normal and face masks are forever required, parades eliminated, meet and greets become a thing of the past, among other current re-opening restrictions, will you forever be done going to Disney parks?

Let me preface this with I thought long and hard about posting this at all. But as I see more and more reactions to re-opening and the restrictions and changes being put in place, I’m really curious to guage the thoughts and feelings of my fellow D-Cotters. Most all of us are familiar with what is going to be required, changed, eliminated during re-opening of the parks. We of course hope these changes won’t last forever. But let’s go hypothetical for a moment and say they do. Let’s say the “new normal” becomes the permanent normal: Face masks required. No parades or fireworks shows. No meet and greets or only from a distance.

Are you prepared to give it all up and end your relationship with Disney parks? Will you have the very difficult discussion with your family? If you’re not going because of some or all of these and you don’t want to permanently end your trips, what would it take to change? Just face masks? Parades? Something else? I’m not saying anyone is wrong for not going now, nor are they wrong for going now. This is a personal and family decision and your opinion will be valued. But I am very interested in knowing if people are prepared to stop going altogether if things don’t change.

One final note, everyone is entitled to their thoughts, feelings, and opinions on what it means to their family and whether they will continue to go or not. Please respect that and each other. If I see one person belittling or attacking another for their opinion or decision, your comment will be deleted, no questions asked.

I’m not exactly eager about all the new rules, but I’m fortunate enough to live close and have relatively free access, so I’d like to at least try it out and gauge the experience personally before I make the final decision. It doesn’t sound awful but it also doesn’t sound enjoyable. I’ve seen positive reviews on Universal’s and SeaWorld’s reopening, so I have reason to believe that maybe it’s not so bad. Now if I had to spend a couple hundred bucks on airfare, lodging, food, etc., then I would at least take a break for a while and wait for the system to work out the “bugs,” but I wouldn’t stop altogether until I experienced it. :stitch:

I know we would still go. I have honestly gotten so used to putting on a mask these days (NJ we can’t go anywhere without them) that I hope it wouldn’t hinder me in Disney. Granted we never go in the super hot months so I can’t imagine that. But I know we would still
Go, just maybe not as often :( Disney magic is a feeling for me, as soon as I get under that sign I just feel better. I am sure that will continue. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I would not let the “new normal” stop me from eventually going. I think like most things even if the wearing of masks and gloves is the new normal once we are accustomed to it, like when they change a speed limit or add a stop sign to a street, we will get used to it and Disney will figure out how to make it work, like say boxed off areas for family groups to watch parades and fireworks plus enhanced cleaning. It’s kinda like when my house was flooded, for the longest it seemed like the dealing with all that came with that was the “new normal” for me, but after a year is was fixed, put on the market and sold and I was back to the same old routine. It just takes time.

That being said I believe this like most everything shall pass and either we come up with a vaccine, treatment of this strain of the virus mutates itself out of widespread existence.

Not sure what we will do… wearing a face mask from here on out is ridiculous… people pass out from the Florida heat WITHOUT wearing a mask… how will some people cope with this… now if this rumor is true about having to have a reservation just to enter a park and there may be no more park hopping, this may be a deal breaker… not sure why all this change but we will find other places to visit or just stick to cruising on DCL. Time will tell

i don’t think i would go nearly as often (unless they have considerable price drops as well LOL ) and i would definitely avoid summer time. i mean idk i really don’t think things will be like this forever? like yeah maybe it’ll be a few years, but eventually we’ll either have a vaccine or there’ll be herd immunity. and if they’re worried about future pandemics i would like to think that society and the government will be a little better prepared or take it more seriously? so that this wouldn’t happen again, ya know? (not trying to make things political, a lot of countries have dropped the ball lol)

I believe sanity will return. We will get a vaccine and covid will be treated like the flu every year.

We would discuss it as a family for sure but I’m pretty confident in saying, no, we wouldn’t return. I would rather have my Disney memories of past trips be as they are now, not of masks, physical distancing, limits and frustrations. Disney has lost the magic for me with all of these restrictions. It costs us thousands of dollars to do a Disney trip so no, I wouldn’t spend that much money on a less than magical experience.

Most of my happiest Disney memories are from Meet and Greets with the characters. If they take that away I might still come if I’m down in the area, but as for planning a vacation, maybe if they drop the price or at bare minimum stop with the yearly price increases. Plus I can barely breath with a face mask on here in Southern Illinois. I can’t imagine what it would be like in Florida

We would definitely discuss it as a family and make a decision. Most likely if it doesn’t go back to almost pre-pandemic, then no, we probably would not go. The way things are now is not very magical, but I think we would go once or twice to at least “test the waters” before any rash decisions would be made especially since we just became DVC members.

I’m so on the fence about this right now! My gut reaction answer is that yes, we would still go. But if face masks are required indefinitely, I think it would only be in cooler months (Nov., Dec.) and not every May like we’ve been doing for 15 years. I get hot easily already, and add a face mask to the mix and I’d be miserable in the warmer months. Jeeze Louise, my face is a sweaty mess when I just wear my mask to go to Walmart! :D The other thing I think would be a deal breaker for me is having to make reservations to get into the parks indefinitely. They’ve already said they’re going to block out days for AP holders, and that it will be difficult for AP holders to make reservations for multiple days. That just isn’t gonna cut it for me if we can’t get into more than a couple parks per trip just because we’re AP holders. I’m really interested to see how this change plays out. Two other changes that might be deal breakers for me if they became permanent: no park hopping and not being able to visit resorts without having a hotel reservation to stay there. We’re long past the park commando days where we get to the park for rope drop and don’t leave until it closes. We bounce around the parks depending on how crowded they are, where we want to eat, etc. And resort hopping is one of our favorite things to do – visit the gift shops, eat at the QS places. It would take a lot away from our trips if we weren’t able to do that anymore. Man, I just hope the changes they’ve made in response to the virus are temporary and we can get back to normal eventually. :(

This sums it up for me too. It’s not that I think restrictions aren’t necessary and I think they shouldn’t be trying to stop the spread, it’s that I go to WDW to get away from the real world. If WDW and the real world are one and the same there’s no point. It’s not about not wanting to wear a face mask (although that SUCKS) it’s about the magic, which is currently gone. No high 5-ing cast members, no visiting your favorite character, no fast passes, no parades, no shows, no fireworks, no park hopping, no interactive queue experiences, how in the heck would Food & Wine work? What about trick or treating at MNSSHP? Two things I do every trip. What is even left at that point? I’m not spending all that money to do close to nothing and have a very subpar Disney experience. Defeats the purpose.

I am hoping (and I know I keep saying this) that it will be like the Spanish flu was and everything will eventually become as it was. I don’t think we should keep this higher level of sanitation going all the time because that creates issue where we’ll be unable to fight things off in the future, plus it impedes regular life. If Disney uses COVID as an excuse to permanently remove the above mentioned attractions – I’m done. It would upset me but it’s kinda like when you miss college years later and wish you were still in college. You can’t go back and even if you did it wouldn’t be the same.

Side note: I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT STAND when people say “new normal”. This isn’t new, we’ve done this before, maybe not in any of our personal lifetimes but it’s happened before, and it’s not normal. This isn’t how life is supposed to be, this isn’t what usually happens as a matter of routine. Some people say that I guess to mean “in this moment” but I think it has connotations (normal meaning routine/regular) that this is how life is from here until eternity. I don’t believe that’s the case ergo I will not refer to this moment in time as a “new normal”.

AMEN @starbee, can we just call it the “current normal” or “current situation”? I mean, it rains at the World, we put on our ponchos and trash bag rain coats because it is raining, but once it is over we take them off (lest we sweat to death!) and go about our merry way, it’s not the “new normal.”

On the other side could this lead to allowing masks at MNSSHP? :smirk:  :pumpkin: Unfortunately I would bet not.

@starbee I hate it too. There is NOTHING “normal” about this, and I don’t want it to become normal. Not in our everyday lives, not on vacation. I fear it becoming normal.

I am a big science nerd and I can honestly say I’m surprised this is the first time the world has been impacted by a pandemic of this magnitude. These type of viruses will continue to happen and this world is now a Covid-19 world. This virus will not just “disappear” and we all need to learn to live in a world with it in it. I think the world had it’s head in the sand that this type of thing wouldn’t happen. But scientifically it was inevitable and we all need to learn to live in this world of deadly viruses.

I have continued to work at my office, full time since it began. We changed our procedures, we changed our rules, we changed the way we worked with clients. And it’s been fine. This is how we will continue to work because, like I said, this virus isn’t going to go away. I think it’s only smart to continue to use safe practices. As the world warms these viruses will become more prolific and we humans need to adjust our ways. It’s just the way it is.

I plan to continue our plan to go in March 2021. My kids are excited and I am too. Will we wear masks while standing in line. Sure. Because I want to keep my germs to myself and I want other people to as well. Will it be hot? I’m sure it will, but I’d rather be hot than sick. I think too many people see this is a way that Disney is “losing the magic” but really, think about the way it was in 1965. Was there all this “magic” that included holograms, and all that jazz? No, there was “magic” because it was fun, it was the colors, and the smells, and the songs, and the people. I plan to take the time to get back to the basics. Enjoy what Walt brought us. The “magic” in the feeling, not the magic in the “stuff”. Will it be different? Yeppers. Will it have some sadness of not having it the same? Yeppers. But I really think the magic is still there. We just have to push through to learn how to see the magic in the world we live in. :ariel:
