I was just wondering what everyone thought about this subject. What do you think makes a movie go completely nuts like Frozen and one end up a complete flop like Atlantis. Or even movies like Tangled that are every bit as good as Frozen (better IMO) and it just doesn’t take off like gangbusters. I mean they have the same corporate machine behind them doing the promotion. For me, the place where maybe Pocahontas drops the ball is that there wasn’t a lot of humor in it. She was a pretty serious character, but Hercules I thought was funny and entertaining, but it seems no one else did. lol So what do you think makes a Pocahontas and what makes a Lion King?

oooh that’s a good question! i think a lot of it has to do with the music, at least IMO. like personally, i think the music in frozen is a lot better than tangled. i feel like half of the tangled soundtrack is reprises, which gets boring after a while. also “let it go,” is such a fun, motivating song. i feel like the same thing can be said for hercules in terms of the music not being anything special. the first four songs on the soundtrack are all just the muses establishing the story, there’s not really any fun in that. plus danny devito’s song is hands-down one of the worst disney songs ever.

also, i think aesthetic has a lot to do with it. for example, in the eyes of a child, what looks more appealing, a goofy looking singing snowman, or the “harsh,” style of atlantis? (not that it’s harsh per say, i just don’t know how else to describe it?) tbh i’ve never seen atlantis just because it doesn’t seem interesting, and i’m just basing that off the animation. it just doesn’t look fun. again, that’s just my opinion!

You would be totally correct IMO about Atlantis. I went and saw it at the theater and it had to be the worst Disney film I’ve ever seen. I to this day couldn’t tell you anything about it. There was another movie that seemed very similar that came out around the same time and I can’t even remember what it was. Something about a journey to the center of the Earth maybe? I remember McDonalds having the toys in a happy meal for it, but that’s about it. I didn’t think those two even looked like Disney animation.

Interesting topic! I don’t have a whole lot to contribute because I always seem to be in the minority here :P I think Tangled blew Frozen out of the water but that’s clearly not how the majority of people think. I’m a big Pocahontas fan too :poca:

Yes that’s it!! Awful! I wonder why they put out such a bad movie? I also thought Coco was boring as all get out and apparently the rest of the world did as well because there’s no “all things Coco” going on. For me that one started to feel like just a grab at a different demographic. I was super disappointed in the humor in that one….there wasn’t any lol. Sad because I thought the storyline was really good. So much they could’ve done with it. I just think they dropped the ball.

No minority with me! I completely agree. I thought Frozen was cute but not nearly as funny. I thought Flynn Ryder was the best hero to come along in a while, and Sven or whatever his name is didn’t come close. Tangled I can watch over and over, but Frozen doesn’t hold my interest as much. I think both have great songs but Tangled is on the top of my list of Disney movies for sure.
