just realized we don’t have a topic for my favorite little mermaid’s new movie despite all the backlash over who’s playing ariel, i’m excited to see what halle bailey can do! i’m just nervous since she’s an R&B singer, and lin manuel miranda (who’s writing music for the movie) does more hip-hop and rap, that they’re going to try and do something funky with “part of your world.” IMO that’s the most iconic disney song and if they ruin it, i’ll probably cry
also, is anyone else losing sleep trying to figure out how they’re going to make a movie that 50% of takes place underwater???
July 7, 2019 at 10:26 pm #113062casting choice is wrong. sometimes i think they make these decisions to just rock the boat. ugh.
July 8, 2019 at 8:13 am #113070Its going to be so so so so so so so different than the animated version. Not sure how I feel about it…. I do personally wish they had kept truer to the Disney version like they did with the Jungle Book, Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, etc.

They figured out the Jungle Book and the Lion King so I’m sure they’ll do fine with this. Plus (not Disney but) Aquaman was incredible and that was largely underwater. However, I once again ask why remake something “live action” when you’re mostly using CGI, seems pointless

Agreed!
July 8, 2019 at 9:48 am #113074The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney movies and Ariel is my favorite princess. But I will not be seeing this movie.
July 8, 2019 at 9:58 am #113075I’m full of so much live-action remake fatigue that I don’t really about the casting decisions…or the movie, really. All I want out of this movie (that I’m not gonna see) is a cameo by Jodi Benson, maybe Pat Carroll too

I couldn’t be more with you! Not going to pay to go see it, not going to see it when it comes to video, not going to see it for free if family or friends has it. Nope, hard pass for me!
And what are they going to do with the meet and greet? And parade? If they change my Ariel, yes I said MY Ariel , Oooooo, ((words I can’t say on D-Cot))! And if they don’t change them, how will they explain THAT one to the kids?! They probably won’t bother explaining it, seems to be their way now to just hope the public doesn’t notice the things they are doing or not doing. Sorry, got on my soapbox.July 8, 2019 at 10:12 am #113078Ariel was my first Disney princess love, so I do have an emotional attachment to the character. Before the announcement, I had never heard of her. After watching some videos of Halle Bailey, I think she’ll do a great job. She’s gorgeous, has a lovely princess-like singing voice, and has the youthful energy needed for the role.
I’m curious to see who will round out the cast, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for Tituss as Ursula (I adore him, he’d bring just the right amount of camp to the role)
I’m totally biased, but I’m psyched that Lin-Manuel Miranda is involved, he did a fantastic job with Moana and is just the most adorable human
July 8, 2019 at 10:28 am #113079I’m with Scott here…are we gonna have two lines to see two different Ariels at the parks? It makes no sense…they are doing it on purpose for the press and honestly i think a lot of people (me included) will stay home. i don’t mind that they change the stories slightly or remove the singing but you don’t mess with the main character. that’s a big no-no for me.

Same!
July 8, 2019 at 11:13 am #113087@Nascfan @jamiedawn27 If there is any change, it’ll probably be temporary. The live-action Jungle Book brought a replacement for Rivers of Light, and it was temporary (thank God). The live action BATB brought a “temporary” overlay to Village Haus in DLR, but that’s still around and even then it still seems like it’s themed to the original. BATB is just now getting a permanent fixture in the Grand Floridian, which makes no sense to me but here we are. The most that will probably come out of this is a sneak preview in DHS. And they’re not gonna explain it. You said it yourself, that’s what they do now. They didn’t explain why Maleficent is still green skinned in Boo to You or Fantasmic. No explanation why Will Smith isn’t the safety spiel for the Magic Carpets.
@kcboston As much as I would love Tituss (that rendition was really good), I read somewhere that they’re considering Melissa McCarthy which just seems like such an odd choice to meJuly 8, 2019 at 11:21 am #113088i don’t understand melissa mccarthy as ursula. as much as i love her, she plays the same character in all her movies, and i’m almost 99% positive she’ll do that to ursula too. if they’re doing all these crazy changes to the casting, why not make ursula a drag queen, as that’s who she was originally based on? i think that’d be cool to see
July 8, 2019 at 11:24 am #113089also, i’m not trying to fight, i’m genuinely curious, what’s the big deal with having ariel be played by a person of color? it’s not like ariel was based on a real person, and she’s a mermaid after all. why can’t black women be mermaids?
July 8, 2019 at 11:29 am #113090@sej101 I may be wrong (it happens all the time ) but I don’t remember a live action remake character ever having a meet and greet, or affecting any in park characters. I think it’s been more overlays (like you mentioned) and movie props (I remember they had the live action Cinderella coach on display, but never switched out the meet and greet character or her costume)
And the Rivers of Light thing, wasn’t that because they were supposed to debut it, but the floats kept sinking? They desperately needed SOMETHING to plug in for a nighttime show, since they had extended park hours that summer. I think that was more of a weird timing thing than an intentional attempt at integrating live action into the park
