@pa_timekeeper that is so cool!! I would love to hear your quartet’s version of Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah! I absolutely loved playing the bass clarinet. I played it in our concert bands, and regular clarinet in marching band. We got to march through Epcot when we went to the Citrus Bowl (not nearly as cool as the Rose Bowl and DL!!) My college marching band got to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as the Santa Band, and that was pretty neat!
@chris_white2323 my HS boyfriend was on the drum line playing snare…he tried to teach me how to play and I just could never get it, lol! He also tried out for Phantom, but didn’t make it lol!@yoda That’s awesome!! When I first joined band, I wanted to play trumpet, but eventually landed on the clarinet. Trumpets are awesome!!

chris_white2323327 XPthose are great stories. I can only imagine the Macy’s Parade or EPCOT. Drumming can be hard, but sometimes I think easier than playing other instruments. A trade off I guess. One thing’s for sure – we band geeks share a special bond.
July 20, 2018 at 10:08 am #83216@chris_white2323, you are absolutely right! It’s a really special bond, even among people who weren’t in the same band together. It just seems to be one of those things taht instantly unites people! One of the reasons I loved it so much!

10dedfish177 XPI was never a marcher, but I did support them in HS. My wife marched, my oldest daughter marched, and I was a very dedicated pit crew dad for 3 yrs.
July 20, 2018 at 11:41 am #83249@10dedfish, band parents are just as much a part of the band family as the kids are! And oh man, those pit crew parents put in some WORK!

July 20, 2018 at 11:48 am #83252@10dedfish, I believe it!!!
July 20, 2018 at 12:40 pm #83274So If I’m right… we should see @chris_white2323 in here?

chris_white2323327 XP@10dedfish the parents absolutely work their tails off. all volunteers. and I can tell you first hand most of the drum corps support staff is volunteer only, or some for very little pay. and without them we wouldn’t have been able to perform, travel, eat, sleep, you name it.
@PA_Timekeeper wow! talk about WAY back! yes, I’m in there. that was our warm up right before finals – the night I aged out. Bass drummer – 2nd in line (the short one!)that made me think of the line “aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?” only reason they put me on that drum was because I was so short, but shorter than the guy playing #1. but he really wanted that drum so they moved me from #3 to #2 in 1991. Greatest thing in a way even though I had to relearn all the parts, exercises, everything. but #2 is harder to play, and I had WAY more notes.

chris_white2323327 XP@laprana yet another great reason I love this site. it can be hard to find people who “get” the Disney fandom, but also much harder to find people who understand the band member or family member bond.
July 21, 2018 at 1:20 am #83325@chris_white2323 and @pa_timekeeper, that video is fantastic!! Man, it took me right back to my band days. Hearing the drum line warming up before a halftime show or competition was one of my favorite sounds in the world. Still is!
@chris_white2323 I couldn’t agree more. It is hard to find that kind of kinship and understanding on both fronts, for sure! Makes me even more grateful for this siteJuly 21, 2018 at 1:33 am #83326
chris_white2323327 XPyeah. I loved warming up about as much as I did the shows. We were very serious a lot of the time, you know, focus and intensity and all that. but we had a lot of behind the scenes fun. band practice, getting ready for football games, or breaking it all down after, it was so much fun. great times.
have a great weekend!
July 21, 2018 at 1:45 am #83327@pa_timekeeper, @chris_white2323 you guys inspired me to search YouTube to see if any of my marching bands’ performances happen to be on there. I can’t find anything from high school, but I did find my college band’s Macy’s Parade performance! Man, so many memories!! Here’s a link to it if you’re interested! I’m the one playing the clarinet!

chris_white2323327 XPwow that’s great! I bet that was a fun trip! it looked like it was pretty cold. always seemed like when you did a parade it was boiling hot or freezing.
