Traveling with Light Sabers

My husband and I built a custom light saber at Savi’s Workshop in October. I had read blog posts before I did so of people traveling home with the saber as their carry-on. Eventually I will finish my review post for D-Cot but when you build the light saber you are given a sheath to store and carry it in. That’s how people were taking them as a carry on for their flights. I don’t trust other people so we did not take ours on the plane because although the sheath is padded, I didn’t want someone else’s luggage or carelessness breaking my saber in either the overhead bins or my checked bag. Instead we disassembled our sabers and put the hilt in the sheath and packed those in our checked baggage. The blades we then shipped from our resort to our home. They arrived home before we did we watched the resort package the blades very carefully and they arrived home safely. Shipping 2 blades from Old Key West Resort to Oklahoma cost $15. Well worth it! The hilts survived in our checked baggage. If you’re not staying at a resort, you can also ship items home from the parks. They just need to see your receipt for the item you purchased.

The bigger issue we faced that we didn’t even think about prior to building the sabers was not being able to take them on rides. They did not allow anyone with a light saber to enter the queue for Rock n Roller Coaster, they had to be left with a non rider who stayed outside. On the Tower of Terror they ask that you put them on the floor which made me nervous that someone would step on them since they’re so long they invade the floor space of other guests. So, unless you ship them immediately after buying them, I would suggest you make them closer to the end of the day before you leave the park so you’re not carrying them around all day and missing out on rides. Plus, I love the pictures I have with my light saber in the dark at Galaxy’s Edge!

we have decided to do ONE for our family of five and then buy some extra light crystals (or whatever) to change it later at home if we want. $200 is a lot (@starbee says it is worth it) but I can’t see buying 3 so we all get the experience. my younger two will just have to cruise around with me instead…maybe a baby yoda will be enough to make them happy?

That’s very helpful information Starbee! I did read that you could have them either left at guest relations (or some other location) at the front of the park so you can pick it up on your way out. You could also have it sent back to your room.

We had a bad experience with having something sent to our room in the past, so we have never done it again. I didn’t know about Guest Relations! Thanks for the input

If you are a big Star Wars fan I think it’s worth it. If you didn’t grow up wishing you had a light saber and wondering how it worked, maybe not so much. I do concede though that $200 isn’t cheap, it’s not like we all have that money to cough up at any given moment, but I think for what you get it makes sense. The sabers at Tatooine Traders are $20 for a reason.
