I never really had endurance to run but I keep trying to build it up, I run a minute and walk and then run again and so on, love running I just wish my body would cooperate !!

I’ve run on and off for the past several years. I usually take the late fall and winter off, then run in the spring, summer, and early-mid fall. I hate treadmills, don’t have space for one anyway, and live in the Chicago area. So, winters are tough for me. When I do run, it’s usually only 3 days a week. Back in HS, I ran track & Cross country, but I have trouble finding the time, energy, and bodily stamina to run more than that without injury.

Honestly, this year has not been a good one for me. I tend to only get my runs in during the week of they are in the morning, but I seem to have been having to get up early for work stuff lately. I’m way out of practice, and need to get going again.

Just keep at it! I was in the spot about 2 yrs ago. I would struggle with 5k’s. Now I’ve done several half marathons and several spartan races.

My work schedule changes from day to day and I travel a lot as well.

I prefer to run in winter, but I live in Coastal NC, near Norfolk. I think the coldest temp I have run in was 9 Degrees with a w/c of -2. But I only did 2 miles in that.

Can anyone share any tips for someone just starting to run?

I suggest the Couch to 5K app. A couple of my girlfriends have started using it and the way it has you progress, IMO, is pretty good and slow but steady. For me, after I did a race or 2, that’s when I got addicted. Having a goal to work towards always keeps me motivated to keep doing it, no matter how much I dont want to in that moment. The payoff is always worth it.

Since I have my drivers license, running is not an option. The car is much quicker. :p

@bexruns Thanks! I’ve found a plan that I like, I’ve had to adjust it a little because I’m so out of shape I can’t keep up with how quickly it wants to increase the walk/run ratio. Any tips on correct breathing?

I wouldn’t call myself a runner, but my friends and I signed up for the Princess 10k next year, so I figured I’d better start training now since I have never done any kind of distance running before. I started the Couch to 5k at the beginning of May, and I’ve been really pleased and surprised at my progress so far! I also signed up for the virtual 5k running shorts, knowing I have those coming up has kept me motivated!

I am not a morning person, so I run when I get home from work, I shoot for 3 days a week, but can’t always make that happen. Since it’s already hotter than Hades here, I do my running inside on the treadmill. I know a lot of people dislike treadmill running, but it’s been good for me so far, as I’m not too familiar with the running trails in my area, and time is a major issue for me.

I know I need a good pair of shoes, since I have been using an old, worn out pair of sneakers, and I can feel it in spots. What are some of your favorites brands and models of shoes?

@starbee I tend to run with my mouth open just a little. Not like a crazy person but just enough and I make sure I am taking deep breaths. Also make sure you are not clenching your fists when you run.

I have run in Nikes, Asics and now New Balance and I love them all. Of course, its taken a lot of testing all kinds of shoes to get me to this point. If you have a roadrunner sports near you, try the Shoe Dog. What it is, is they have you run on a treadmill and get how your feet are hitting the “ground” and then they can have custom insoles made for your feet specifically so the shoe you choose isn’t the biggest issue. They are a bit pricey, but I know tons of people who swear by them. Also, I know some shoe stores have a trial run policy where if you buy a pair of shoes, you have xx amount of days you can return them by as long as they arent thrashed. “lightly worn” is the term they like to use.

Shoes are very person specific. That being said depending on your gate and foot shape and arch you really need to go to a reputable running shop and try a bunch on. It makes a huge difference to have happy feet! But be prepared to drop between $125 and $175 for a really good pair. In my eyes its well worth it to not get shi splints and knee pain and such by spending a bit extra for my chariots! Happy shopping.
