    I guess now that I think about it, April used to be registration month and I haven’t heard anything, not even for virtual. You’d think by next January we’d be in the clear or good enough to host a race.

    You would certainly think and hope so. But if they can make more money on virtuals, that seems to be the way of the company these days.

    Very true, but I wonder if they really do make more on virtual races? I heard there used to be 25,000 runners on Marathon Weekend across the 4 races and 2 challenges. Would there be that many runners virtually? I know the cost of the races have to be factored in, but when you think of 25,000 people at WDW for at least 2 days (assuming they came in Expo day and left after the 5K the next day), many of which will come with their families or friends, staying largely on property for ease of access to the races, spending money at the Expo, eating at Disney dineries, paying for park admission, buying souvenirs, etc. I think they’d be making a bucket load more on in-person races. At least plenty of profit to make it worth their time.

    I’d love to know just what they do make. I know they have a whole lot of very smart bean counters crunching those numbers though for sure!

    I saw that email too. I’m wondering if Lasting Commemoratives is simply wanting to clear out all their extra stock? Without any in person races, people likely have forgotten about that company since they aren’t seeing them at expo’s and such. They are probably tired of having race medals from 10 years ago! LOL But with that said, I truly am not super optimistic that in person races will return anytime soon. Like you guys mentioned, usually we would have had marathon weekend registration opened up by now. So unless they plan to start at a different race weekend next year, it’s not looking good. Disneyland had said they were just on a temporary pause for construction and disagreements with Anaheim. That was back in 2018, I believe? So truly, I can’t even make an attempt at a guess right now! It seems like Disney would make more money off in-person races since people usually make a vacation out of it. But as far as their race event costs, virtual is much more profit for the race entries alone, I would image. But I have no clue! I’m sure vendors paid a pretty penny to have a booth at the expo, plus registration fees from participants. But then there is staffing for the expo, races, buses, signage, etc. I’m not holding my breath. And honestly, at this point, I don’t think I would even go run a race again.

    I’m running a half marathon in 2 weeks, it’ll be my first one in TEN years! Today I ran my long run, 10 miles, which was the farthest I’ve run in those ten years. I feel extremely proud and accomplished and finally feel like I can do this.

    Thanks @missingWDW it went great! The weather was finally cool and not humid which was perfect. I finished in 2:41, which is officially my slowest half but considering it’s been 10 years, I’m cutting myself a lot of slack. LOL I’m looking forward to doing another one next May. :cool:

    Did anyone else participate in the Disney’s Virtual Series this summer? (The Lion King 5Ks?)

    If so, did you ever receive your medals. I can see in the UPS app were a label was created on 8/16 (from CCG in NJ where previous medals were shipped from) but, as yet, UPS still has not received the package. I have sent a question thru the runDisney website but, no answer (or even acknowledgement) yet.

    @missingWDW
    I was seriously considering it! I would still have a valid AP! However I decided against it because with being in grad school I don’t have time to train right now. I would not make the trip for just a 5k or 10k. If I’m doing marathon weekend I need to be doing at least a half :P what about you?

    I’m sorry :( that does sound like they are held up somewhere. I hope you get an answer from runDisney because they owe you some medals! Was that during the bad weather? I know I ordered something (not from Disney) around that time and I got an email from the retailer saying a label had been created but they would not be dropping off packages until the weather had passed, which I appreciated, because UPS was having delays.

    I did actually get an email yesterday afternoon in response to the question I sent. It said that my package has been shipped and should arrive by 9/30. Since some retailers send you a “shipped” email when the label is created, I wondered if that meant anything other than “we see the label in our system” but, I checked UPS this morning and, sure enough, it’s on its way now. Not sure if that would have happened on its own or if sending the question helped get it going. Who knows? Either way, I’m glad to see progress.

    I have to say, I really preferred receiving the medals in June in previous years so that I could present them to myself one at a time after each 5k that I did. Receiving the lot of them a month after the fact kinda loses something in the way of motivation and excitement. But, I’m still glad I did it. Nobody offers races around here in the summer so, it’s good to have something to keep me hitting the road. :up:

    I briefly considered WDW half in January 2022, but I’ll be in Hawaii on vacation (I almost never go on vacation, and I’ve never been to Hawaii before!) so maybe 2023!
