Yea! That’s a purty medal! You can do it!
January 22, 2021 at 6:38 pm #144503@missingWDW That is such a pretty medal!!!! You can do it!! I have 2 virtual 10k’s and a half marathon to do! And I didn’t run nearly all of last year. One step at a time! We do custom orthotics in our office and that’s what I wear. They can be pricey. But there are some good over the counter ones you can get. Spenco has some good options! Usually you just need proper support so your feet aren’t collapsing, which then causes the muscles to get stretched to far, detaching it from the bone, hence shin splints.

RIDisneyPinGuy182 XPI have officially gone to the dark side and signed up for this summer’s virtual series
April 12, 2021 at 4:54 pm #147937Hey, the dark side has cookies! Congratulations! The Lion King theme is pretty cool!

RIDisneyPinGuy182 XPThe theme isn’t bad. I have actually preferred prior themes far better (TBH not really a fan of the Lion King).
I’ve been pretty open on my take about virtual runs in the past, especially rD, so no need to beat a dead horse. However, it is hard to say you’re a rD fan when you haven’t run one in 5 years. Plus, my faith in the races ever returning is fading fast. Every virtual race sells out, so there is little motivation to get away from the virtual options for rD… so, well, there it is.
I’ve come to the conclusion my resistance to the medal-by-mail movement won’t shift the tide, so I guess I’ll play ball on my own terms. My plan is to piggyback the rDv events to real in-person races if at all possible, and just wear my rD bib along with the in-person event bib. This way there will be actual competition and chip timing, on a certified course.
I’m scheduled for a half-marathon in June, so that will take care of the first event.
April 12, 2021 at 8:11 pm #147940Oh bummer, Lion King (animated) is one of my favorites so I was pretty excited to see them. I’m of the same mindset on if in person races will come back though. Kathy and I have discussed that at length. It costs a LOT of money to put them on and if they can keep making money on virtuals, why should they bring them back? And the prospect of that never happening makes me sad.

Agree 100%.
My biggest motivating factor for running is the prospect of Dopey 2023… I’m not quite sure what would be worse, that race never happening, or that being the event that brings back in-person rD events and getting shut-out trying to register for it.
April 13, 2021 at 9:16 am #147942I share a lot of the same thoughts as y’all when it comes to virtual races. They were perfect for me when I was just starting out and I wanted to participate, but at the same time was overwhelmed and anxious about an in-person race as a newbie runner. Now that I’ve got more experience under my belt, virtual races just don’t motivate me anymore. Having said that, I did register for a virtual race this Spring to try to motivate myself to get back to it. I was on such a great streak – 3 years of regular running. But that all went to crap last year. I always intended to take a month off after Dopey because the training was a lot, but that became a year of not running. Motivation was completely gone without races or PT testing. I wasn’t in a good place at all in terms of mental health, exercise and diet. But I’m trying really hard to get back into good habits in person races are returning in my neck of the woods and now I’m fully vaccinated!
Plus, my faith in the races ever returning is fading fast.
I hate to say it, but same here. I thought the Disneyland events were just pausing due to Galaxy’s Edge construction but they never came back. And didn’t the Tower of Terror 10 miler pause for the same reason? But didn’t return. I think they will either remain virtual or disappear completely. But I’m hoping they don’t.

My biggest regret about the Dopey is not continuing to run afterwards. I took a break, which stretched into about a year off. I have struggled ever since with my commitment, motivation, and performance. It is hard, especially after putting so much into it, and the need to recover from it.
As far as ToT10mi, that was allegedly due to construction. However, W&D (the other night race) converted to days shortly after. I think it was just too much logistically, and too hard to manage with people and traffic after park close vs. early mornings before open. And weather did play a role as races had to be shortened or red-flagged due to weather.

I wish I hadn’t slacked off and let it become a year. Sadly this is how I’ve often been, a fair weather runner. Until I enlisted and had the accountability of a looming PT test, I was in a vicious cycle of running in the fall and spring when the weather was nice, and quitting during the winter and summer. It meant I never progressed because every time I got to a decent point I’d take months off and regress. I had the best of intentions not to do that after Dopey but unfortunately the hardships of covid ruined that. Trying really hard to get better this year because now I can’t believe I completed Dopey. I struggle with a 5K at this point. I’m so embarrassed and ashamed.

Thanks for the input!
April 26, 2021 at 3:51 pm #148201I completed the ProCompression Spring Classic (virtual) 5K yesterday! It was a little bit of a struggle run. I hadn’t trained for it like I should have thanks to weather, getting vaccinated, and trying to get a new job. I also only had 1 free weekend this month. This coming weekend I’ll be working again, sigh. I did complete two 2 mile runs ahead of this 5K but I didn’t think to post them here.
Time: 38:27
Distance: 3.2 miles
Pace: 11’59”It was a beautiful sunny day and 66* when I got out there to run in my neighborhood. The first mile is always the hardest and I was kind of a grump. Miles 2 and 3 were better but the 17 mph winds were making it rough. Still I got it done I was so proud of myself I thought I had a pretty decent time too considering my lack of running!
April 26, 2021 at 4:10 pm #148202You had a great time Chloe! You should be proud, I am very proud of you! You got out there and got it done! Way to go!
April 26, 2021 at 5:12 pm #148206Thank you now that it’s warming up (and hopefully will quit raining constantly) I’m hoping to get back into a regular routine
April 26, 2021 at 7:59 pm #148209I know you’ll feel good about that!
