Why is WDW not currently building any more Value or Moderate resorts??

I think Universal is using this to get the upper hand. They opened their second “value” resort equivalent this year with a third to open next year. They are making a Universal resort stay more and more affordable while Disney continue to focus on the elite. What I don’t know is why that’s Disney’s game plan as of late. I think Walt would turn over in his grave if he knew

Y’all are right about the parks getting busier and busier, the off season is disappearing. I guess with that happening Disney feel like they can push the envelope and focus on people with more money because they’re still super busy. I get that Disney is a business and they’ll look at where the money’s at, but I’m still surprised because 1) it started as a family thing. A place to vacation where everyone of all ages can have fun together. I would think that being family oriented would mean appealing the majority of families but I need to accept that Disney abandoned that long ago and 2) I just can’t believe there are that many people with that amount of money to spend at Disney. I’m not one of those people nor will I ever be

As a long time DVC member my thought is, from experience, the advanced booking times are getting ridiculous. 7-11 months in advance because of growing membership and lack of availability. Plus the fact they do not release all rooms that are on site to members because they can charge rack and discounted rate to non members who want to have these types of rooms. DVC is an extremely profitable venture for them. Regardless of what I’ve just mentioned, DVC is great and we are so glad we joined back in 2006.

You raise a valid point, it’s almost double dipping on Disney’s part because once someone’s bought into DVC, not even all the rooms at a “DVC Resort” are available to those members! I remember last year for the first time ever we were not able to book at our home resort at the 11 month window! :surprised: I was shocked and really pissed off that we got waitlisted, but of course we had the option pay cash for the room – after buying in to DVC and paying annual dues I could pay even more cash to stay at my home resort!

I’m going to say this again. I’ve spoken to a number of DVC members and a common complaint appears to be the inability to get a room when you want one and the yearly maintenance fee. I keep thinking as often as I go to WDW it would be a good idea to purchase one but as much as I try there is no way to make the numbers work out. If you own a DVC contract and enjoy it good for you but I don’t see why anyone would do this. Just add the maintenance fee and yearly contract payment and you can reserve a resort at a better price and still be free to do what you want next year.

I work with a DVC owner who uses it to go places other then WDW. She seems happy with it that way.
But after she gave me all the ownership details I just can’t justify the costs either.
I’ve never been unable to get a room at WDW even only a couple months out at any price level I choose.
Possibly if park tickets were included it might be ok, but……

And I’m still free to use the vacation dollars to go anywhere I want.
Even if I end up at WDW most years, I still want the flexability.
