Everyone has at least one Disney story worth telling but doesn’t really fit into any of the other topics. Here is a place to share stories (if you want to share them).

    I’ll start

My parents never took me to a Disney park so I had convinced myself I didn’t want to go as a way to cope. In 2009

I was visiting friends in Orlando and they were going to spend a day at Disney. I didn’t want to go but after several hours of nagging I caved. I had built a wall around myself to keep the magic out.

We started the day at Epcot. One of my friends was a smoker so we were waiting for him at a smoking area. A Cast Member working as a Custodian named Roger came up to us and saw my 1st visit button.

He shared stories of his first visit and what it’s like to be a Cast Member (That was the first time I heard that phrase). Well that got be to drop the wall I built and enjoying the day.

It wasn’t until we hopped over to the Magic Kingdom that I fully got hooked. Standing there in the central hub staring at Cinderella Castle in the bright Florida sun with the Main Street Philharmonic in the background, I teared up from sensory overload.

I could have stood there all day just looking at the Castle, but my friends pulled me away. I wanted to stop and take in all the scenery I was seeing but my friends only wanted to hit attractions nonstop.

So I didn’t get to meet any characters or even be able to process what I was seeing or stay for Wishes. As we were leaving I turned around and took one more look at the Castle. It was then I knew I had to come back. I’ve gone to WDW at least once a year every year since (except last year when I went to Disneyland instead).

I took some friends in 2016 to see the Christmas decorations at the Magic Kingdom resorts (Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge). We were all fine and dandy until we had to take a boat from the Wilderness Lodge back to the Contemporary that would take us back to a monorail so we could get to our car at the Polynesian. We headed to the Bay Lake ferry, when we hear “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.” We look at the upcoming boat and the captain IS SINGING. We knew we had to get on his boat. He began to sing “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” but then he interrupted his singing to tell a story about the shoe tree.

If you don’t know what the shoe tree is, it’s a tree that’s seen right before the Wilderness Lodge dock and it’s full of shoes from some of the captains. The captain we had told a story of a famous man who threw a pair of glitter running shoes at the bottom of the tree and made everyone promise not to tell anyone who threw it there. Then the captain said he was faithful to that promise to Michael.

Then he began singing “A Whole New World.” When he was done with that, he gave some fun information on the California Grill at the top of the Contemporary. Then he sang “When you wish upon a Star.”

I was sad to leave him. :note: :note:

I mentioned this a bit in the Have You Ever thread so I’ll tell the whole thing.

For my birthday on year my best friend gave me a custom shirt that had my name (Tony) and a picture of Tinker Bell on it. (This comes into play later)

Jumping a head a couple years I was working on my computer one day when my friend (the same one who gave me gave me the shirt) Sent me an email with a link to a Walt Disney World job fair. I wasn’t sure I had enough magic in me to be a Cast Member but I ended up talking myself into filling out the application. I figured that would be the end of things.

The next morning when I check my email I have an email from Disney inviting me to the 2nd part of the application process. My heart perked up a bit as I took the test that came with the email. They said I’d hear back one way or another within 7 days. So I figured I had a week left of wishful thinking.

My dog Winnie (but I call her Pooh) needed to go for a walk so I take her out. When I come back about half an hour later, I see another email from Disney. Pretty sure was a rejection letter I was hesitant to open it. Turns out they wanted me to come to Orlando for an in person interview. My heart soared. I got to pick the day and time so I booked it for 2 weeks from that day (due to Southwest having better prices for Orlando that week). I started to book an impromptu trip. I decided that since I had never stayed at Pop Century (and my friend who gave me the shirt and linked me to the job fair had recommended it).

So the day to go to Orlando comes.I was bragging to anyone who would listen about my upcoming interview. I flew down the day before the interview to have some time to relax. (I’m gonna skip to the actual interview because what happened that day needs to finish up the story)

The interview did not go well. Mostly because I had no plans to move to Florida unless I got that job. I left the Casting Office with a broken heart. As I walked over to Disney Springs I went through Denial hoping this just a nightmare and the interview hadn’t happened yet. Upon getting to Disney Springs I saw all the happy Cast Members and got angry at myself for not being able to join them. Stage 2. I got on a bus to Art Of Animation since I didn’t want to wait for the bus to Pop I was sitting in the back of the bus crying. Stage 3 Upon reaching AoA I started the trek to Pop thinking about what I should have said. Stage 4. By the time I got back to my room I accepted the fact that I didn’t make the cut.

I spent the rest of the day touring the resorts (not having a park ticket). I was at the Grand Floridian in the lobby looking around at the shops when I get tapped on the shoulder. A Cast Member in the turn of the century attire was standing there. First thought was “Did I wander into a backstage area on accident.” He asked if I flew in from St. Louis the day before. To say I was confused would be an understatement.

Turns out he was on the same flight and remembered a guy in a Mickey Mouse Fantasia hat saying he was going for an interview. It really is a small world after all.

(Back to the day before the interview). I was wearing the Tinker Bell shirt (Which again is out of character. My Areil shirt is usually on the top of my Disney shirt lineup)

After touring both Pop and AoA I decided to take it easy and stay at the resort (very out of character for me. I usually hit the ground running.) I got some dinner and a refillable mug and went to the pool area to watch the poolside movie. That night it was Ratatouille. Halfway through the movie the projector stopped working and they were unable to fix it so the rest of the movie was cancelled.

Slightly bummed I headed to the food court to refill my mug. I walked by a young boy and who I assumed to be his Grandma. I overheard him asking why the movie stopped. Always being one to help I relayed to him what the Cast Member told me.

Suddenly his Grandma’s eyes filled with tears. She locked me in a bear hug so tight I almost couldn’t breathe. She apologized for scaring me, but her son Tony loved Tinker Bell. He recently passed on and she prayed for a sign he made it to Heaven ok.

After the interview went bad I remembered that moment. There were to many variables involved. For that to be a chance encounter you have better odds of winning the lottery…twice. I wasn’t meant to get the job, but I was meant to be at that exact place at that exact time wearing that exact shirt.

I tear up everytime I tell that story. It’s my favorite story (Disney of otherwise) to tell.

@BacksideOfWater Wow and oh my gosh… that is such an amazing story. I love that so much! While I’m very sorry that you didn’t get the job, I am so happy that you were able to provide some Disney Magic to someone else

@backsideofwater What a beautiful story! Just goes to show there are no coincidences in life! And kudos to you for even submitting your application and getting to the in-person interview! I’ve thought about working for Disney for a long time, but have never had the courage to even submit an application. It’s awesome that you took a chance, and if it’s something you really want, don’t give up! You’ll get there!

I think I had this same boat captain on my trip this past May! We stayed at WL and took the boat over to the Contemporary one day, and as the boat pulled up to the dock, the captain was singing “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.” After we boarded the boat and were on our way, he started singing “When You Wish Upon a Star.” It was so cool! And he had a beautiful voice. It made for such a nice boat ride!

2 years ago my daughter was 13 and going through cancer treatments. We live in Texas but we were having to go to Florida for a 6-week inpatient trial. We went a few days early for testing and then had 5 days at Disney before she had to be admitted into the hospital. Several fun and magical things happened that trip:
    1) My daughter was bald from her cancer treatments and it was hot so she often took off her scarf or hat because her head would get too hot holding in the heat. We were boarding Tower of Terror and one of the bald cast members in his Tower of Terror clothes glanced over at her and said, “My regards to your barber.” We laughed and laughed and still do about that.
    2) She and her younger sister were picked to help in The Festival of the Lion King.
    3) She and her sister and my wife were all picked to dance with the Tam Tam Drummers.
    4) When we met Ana and Elsa, they cleared the room and gave us time with them together by ourselves and they posed for pictures together with our family instead of individually.
    5) We had friends contact Disney and tell them about my daughter unbeknownst to us. As a surprise, Disney then arranged for us to get a backstage tour of Rafiki’s Planet Watch and all of the animals, feedings, kitchen, vet area, etc. It was amazing and they showered our girls with some really neat gifts.

It was a wonderful trip with lots of good memories that are even more valuable today. That was our last Disney trip together as she passed away in January of this year. We will always cherish those memories and pictures.
