What does a Disney Legend mean to you…..

There are some DLs this recognition that are Legends no question, but Disney Legends?

    What say others?

To me, a Disney Legend is someone who made a significant contribution to the Walt Disney Company, whether that be in engineering at one of Disney’s theme parks, a musical contribution of some form, an artistic contribution, etc.

So you feel Carrie Fisher and Stan Lee qualify?

Maybe what makes me involuntarily bristle at Carrie Fisher and Stan Lee is that their worlds were purchased by Disney. Their work was not done by or for Disney itself. That is what makes a Disney legend to me.

George Lucas? He partnered in Star Tours. He is a Disney Legend. Anthony Daniels lent his voice for Star Tours? He qualifies. Bruce Broughton ought to be a Disney legend — he’s scored enough movies and rides. Even Jerry Goldsmith for Soarin’. But while John Williams has a lot of music in loops in the parks, the works were not created for Disney. He isn’t a Disney Legend (at least not yet).

Of course, it’s also a simple truth that they had a backlog of true Disney legends who deserved to be recognized, but now I think they’re running low on those reserves.

I guess in the end, let Carrie Fisher and Stan Lee in. I’m not familiar enough with the people of Disney to suggest alternatives.

I think I’d call them legends for Star Wars and Marvel respectively, but not Disney Legends. Sure Disney now owns Star Wars and Marvel, but the vast majority of their contributions to their respective areas happened well prior to Disney acquiring them.

To me, examples of Disney Legends would be Marty Sklar (imagineering), Ward Kimball (animation & imagineering), Mary Blair (art), Kurt Russel (acting), Ed Wynn (acting), Robert and Richard Sherman (music), etc.

    I tend to agree

There is no debating on the Legendary Status of Carrie and Stan in their respective genre’s, but those genre’s and their impact in them happened long before the Disney Purchase, and the impact did not include Disney.

To me the award is more of an introspective impact on the Disney product over time. Simply purchasing the Rights does not deem Disney Legend status to me.

I would not be opposed to a different recognition that acknowledges their contributions to entertainment, but we already have that, dont we……

Yes I agree with @PA_timekeeper and @RocketEar99 on that one. They are legends, but not Disney legends

I hate saying it, because Carrie Fisher is my queen. I loved her so much and not just because of Star Wars but because of what she dealt with growing up…I mean Debbie Reynolds is also a legend in her own right but having to compete against your own mom? Oy. Her drug use during SW and then her own mental health issues on top of that and being a female in Hollywood who was very outspoken. The woman was amazing.
But yeah, Disney Legend? Not sure. :'(

To me, a Disney Legend is someone whose name you hear and you immediately think Disney. Someone who has dedicated their whole life to Disney.

Anymore, it seems like, “WHO CAN GRAB US THE MOST ATTENTION AT D23 THIS YEAR?
Whoopi Goldberg? Sure, make her a Disney legend. She was in DCA’s Golden Dream film, Lion King, and soon Wrinkle in Time. So even though she’s in other projects like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) LET’S MAKE HER A DISNEY LEGEND!

It’s just gonna get more ridiculous from here. “Jake Paul was on Disney Channel, make HIM a Disney Legend!”

    Get it together, Disney. :donald:

Stan Lee has done as much for the comic book industry as Walt did for animation and theme parks. No doubt in my mind that Stan Lee is a legend but all his work was before Disney bought Marvel. Legend yes, Disney Legend no.

Same goes for the late Carrie Fisher. She played one of the most beloved characters in one of the most beloved franchises ever but that was all (except for The Force Awakens) before Disney bought Marvel. Legend yes, Disney Legend no.

WWE has a celebrity wing in there Hal Of Fame just to get some press and bring in a few more viewers. Please Disney don’t be like WWE

I agree with @starbee 100%. Carrie Fisher & Stan Lee are legends but not “Disney Legends”.

Yes! He is a trailblazer. I bet he never imagined the heights his work and legacy would evolve to. It will be a sad day when Stan leaves us
