There was an uproar about Will Smith as Genie. JMHO, without Robin, he is by far the best choice. Robin was my favorite dramatic actor, comedic actor and stand up comedian. I think Will is going to be great.
I think the problem is people don’t want to let go of Robin Williams. For me, no matter who plays Genie and how well they do it, it will still be sad to be reminded of Robin no longer being with us and the original Genie being gone.

bexruns374 XPThe Genie looks a lot better in that trailer than he did in the teaser so it did get my hopes up a bit more. I’m actually not sold on Jafar. I was legit scared of Jafar but this guy I’m like “you’re a pretty boy, not scary at all”.
I’m not *excited* about this movie but I’m definitely coming around to it. We’ll see.March 13, 2019 at 9:25 am #104880I’m actually not sold on Jafar. I was legit scared of Jafar but this guy I’m like “you’re a pretty boy, not scary at all”.

We’ll see.I’m with you, when everyone was getting uptight about Genie, I didn’t really have anything to say about it other than I think Will Smith’s style of humor is different to Robin Williams’s but that’s not a deal breaker. My take-away like you said was Jafar. He was frightening when I was a kid but the actor they cast for the live action is not at all. He doesn’t seem like a villain but I hope he can change my mind.

Totally agree with you both about Jafar. I just watched the new one yesterday and thought I can get on board with Will Smith (not even minding that he’s blue…he has to be, he’s a genie ) but i am not really thrilled with Jafar. Sorely lacking in evil fiendishness maybe he gets worse as the story plays out

Maybe they’re trying to go with “looks innocent, secretly evil” but that wouldn’t be how I would choose to do it. I liked how Jafar was clearly shady from the start in the animated version and because he was so scary, it made sense that he could coerce Aladdin and the Sultan, but not this guy

If they choose to do the “looks innocent, secretly evil” Im so not into it. I mean we all KNOW he’s the bad guy! If this was a new movie that we knew nothing about, sure. But since we know he’s evil, don’t try and play us.
I’m excited for the parade scene as that’s one of my favorite parts from the movie. Im interested to see that whole scene play out before my eyes.
March 13, 2019 at 9:52 am #104887@starbee i think Jafar is WAY off base…however this is a 10 second scene. Jafar should have a deep voice and look devilish. *sigh* trying to withhold judgement as quite frankly i have worried about every adaptation (BATB, Cinderella…) and they keep proving they know what they are doing.

Exactly right!!! Yes it is a short clip so I am hoping to be proved wrong

Eagle90499 XPWe saw the movie yesterday afternoon and it was OK. They changed stuff that didn’t need changed. Added some stuff too. Overall, it was a good watch but it was nothing earth shattering. Will Smith is definitely no Robin Williams but he did alright. Overall, I guess I’d give it a B+. I think I’ll stick with the original for re-watches though.
Oops, double tap.

Eagle90499 XP@eagle90 did you think it was better than the BATB remake?
I like the Beauty and the Beast remake other than the politically correct SJW stuff they put in. I enjoyed it much more than the Aladdin remake.

kiddywhompus6 XPJust saw it this weekend. I was nervous about Will Smith too, but I have to admit he did a good job. There were times where it seemed he incorporated bits of the Robin Williams Genie into his own portrayal of Genie, but he did make the character his own.
I did love it all, except for their adaptation of “One Step Ahead”. I LOVE “One Step Ahead”, and they really made it way too heavy and dark. Why? Aladdin is lighthearted, playful and optimistic, even though he is a “street rat”. They turned the song into something ominous and dreadful. However, “A Whole New World” was stunning!!
Anyone else singing the soundtrack while in the theater? My kids kept shushing me!
