RUMOR UPDATE (July 2019): Disney Responds to Speedway Rumor, Spaceship Earth Refurb & More

The landscape of rumors is forever shifting. In this monthly series, we’ll take a look at all the new updates pertaining to the article on the site. Buckle your seat belts, we’ve got some good ones today!

The Tomorrowland Updates

A rumor sprung up that Tesla would begin sponsoring the Tomorrowland Speedway. As part of their sponsorship, the Speedway would receive new cars, possibly electric. When asked about this on Twitter, Disney responded that this rumor was false. There seems to be no sign of electric cars coming, despite the desire for them.

Grand and Miraculous Changes to Spaceship Earth

The timeline is still not set, but it’s believed to be “way past October.” This means it will survive Food and Wine, possibly Festival of the Holidays. This would make sense, as a large chunk of Epcot will be closed down starting in early September.

Halloween Ever After

One topic in this article was the idea of new ride overlays during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Disney has confirmed which rides are getting overlays. The Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, and Mad Tea Party overlays are returning. Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor in the newest member to get an overlay. After going through the treat trail stationed in the queue, guests will be able to interact with the monsters inside. This attraction will also have an overlay at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, along with Space Mountain, the Mad Tea Party, and the Tomorrowland Speedway.

More details for the new fireworks show at Not-So-Scary have also popped up. The show’s official title is, “Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular.” Hosted by Jack Skellington of The Nightmare Before Christmas, the show will take guests to a haunted house with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy. The show will feature projections and lasers.

The Black Box

A location has been rumored for a Black Box attraction in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This would be Animation Courtyard, the main suspect being Voyage of the Little Mermaid. This live action show currently tells the story of The Little Mermaid. In recent years, it has fallen into decay with many of the effects not working properly, making this a possible target.

A Black Box attraction is also rumored for Disney’s California Adventure. This one would be in Hollywoodland, though it is unknown where.

Experimental Projection Camera of Tomorrow

O Canada! will be closing August 1. Work is already under way on the rocks outside the theater. In the meantime, the theater will be used as a festival space during Food and Wine. What will be here is not very well known, so we just have to wait until August 29 to find out.

  1. Stuff is always changing! Thanks for the update. ;)

  2. What’s a Black Box attraction?

  3. So many changes… but I look forward to seeing what they come up with!

  4. I’m just hoping that Spaceship Earth makes it through the remainder of the year. Or at least December 14th

  5. SEJ101 – December 6th – December 15th. We’re arriving late on that Friday and doing Disney Springs our last day so we have 8 park days to enjoy. Spaceship Earth is an all-time favorite of both my wife & I. Just found out the Canada Pavilion movie is gone which is sad but that just means we’ll have to plan a future trip :)

  6. I would be happy with electric cars. While I love the Speedway as it is now, that would be more in keeping with “tomorrow” to have electric cars. I’m interested to see O Canada used for F&W festival space. It was always fun to see inside the :wol: pavilion and I love Canada! I’m also excited to see the MNSSHP ride overlays this year! :treats:

    • Wouldn’t it? Instead they’re putting in a Tron ride, which I really want, but I could’ve just gone to Shanghai. The electric cars aren’t anywhere in Disney. I’m thinking O Canada might just be an ad space with the screens still up and the leaning rails removed. That’s the only way I could see them doing something.
