In Search Of

No, this isn’t an article on Leonard Nimoy. This is about my all time favorite film from the Disney stables, Mary Poppins. Being so close to the D-COT meet n greet, I’ve been ruminating over what to write about. My last article before I fly across the country to immerse myself in magic and wonderment. In perusing D23’s website, I found …… inspiration!

Bruce C. Steele of D23 penned, or should I say typed, “In Search of Cherry Tree Lane.” Cherry Tree Lane was a creation on a sound stage many years ago. Other then maybe your own childhood home, what street in media history is more iconic then Cherry Tree Lane. Those of us who are Poppin tots, (I may have just coined a new fan club), have vivid memories of this quiet homey road located somewhere in London. It was almost our home. Christopher Robin was done so well that I have an incredible amount of exuberant optimism for this release. In fact, my wife has suggested we Cos Play the theater on opening day. My family won First Place on our Disney Halloween Cruise costume contest when we dressed as Mary Poppins(friend), Bert(DD), Mr Banks(me) and Mrs Banks(The Wifey).

But Cherry Tree Lane is more then a street, it is a culmination of magical events of childhood proportion!

Mr Steele visits props, sets, and other paraphernalia in his musings. For me, when I go In Search Of Cherry Tree Lane, the memories are full of quips, sayings, song, eagerness, and wide eyed wonderment. Far less tangible paraphernalia. After seeing the trailer my heart skipped a beat, and that ain’t safe at my age let me tell you!!!!

The trailer hits on sooooo much. The mirror, the magic, the denial of the magic, seeing Dick Van Dyke, the kite, the snow globe. It all came rushing back to my memory like a tidal wave of fond memories. If you watched this and did not smile, I can only presume this film did not affect you on the same level as the rest of us Poppin Tots (gonna push on this, maybe there will be residuals in it for me)

Leave it to Disney to get the sets so perfect, to stay true to the original feel and respect our memories. I anxiously await to see how Jack is tied to Bert. How Mr Dawes II fits into the story. Is Angela Lansbury the bird lady, or the next Uncle Albert? Is there a man with a wooden leg named Smith? SOOOOO MANY QUESTIONS!!!! Alas, but like everyone else, I will have to wait until Christmas day to open this gift. Who knows, maybe this years most memorable Christmas gift will be from Disney. I anxiously await your arrival Mary Poppins. This (by then) 58 year old Poppin Tot still smiles when he hears your name. May I wish an eternal very early Mary (pun intended) Christmas to all at D-Cot as I hope the wind changes soon…….
