Magic Behind the Music: Wilderness Lodge – Lobby – Area Music

Let yourself be immersed in the surroundings of the Pacific Northwest without even going there! You can find it at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida where this feature track from our Jukebox originated.  D-COT Members have been listening the music loop from the lobby at Wilderness Lodge on the Jukebox since September 1, 2008. That’s quite a long time by D-COT standards! Wilderness Lodge, however, has been around since May 28, 1994.  Prior to its construction, Disney had already developed some stunning and immersive resorts, but it’s safe to say that none compared to this one even though it borrowed from the theme of Disney’s Fort Wilderness campground nearby.

The design of this resort was largely led by the late architect, Peter Dominick, who went on to also lead the development of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.  Disney is known for doing wonderful work in making plaster and cement appear to be naturally formed rock and wood (as with Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life), but at Wilderness Lodge you’ll find that the wood, including the giant timbers supporting the grand lobby are made of actual lodgepole pine imported from Oregon. The lobby also contains a number of authentic Native American Indian artifacts. So, much of what comprises the magnificence of the lobby is quite real.

Visitors who are aware of the lodge may make a point of visiting the resort just to soak in its surroundings for a while even though they are staying overnight elsewhere. Inside the lobby there is a fountain that actually feeds a stream outside. Outside, guests can find things that are typical to Disney resorts, like a themed pool and some dining, but here there is also a man-made geyser that erupts every half-hour. Inside are restaurants that carry the Pacific Northwest theme and cuisine including Whispering Canyon Café, which until May 2018 was anything but whispering as the service team was known to hoot and holler and engage in some shenanigans with the guests.  Also there is the signature restaurant, Artist Point, which you may have recently heard has been reimagined into a dinner spot with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

As for the music that you hear on the Jukebox and in the lodge lobby, it is about 55 minutes long and filled with instrumental western themes, many from western movies and TV you may have seen like “Dances with Wolves,” “The Magnificent Seven,” “The Big Country,” and “How the West was Won.”  D-COT Members have played this track 100,167 times, making it the 11th most played track on the Jukebox! 28 Members have made it a favorite, and Supporters have added it to 19 Custom Playlists. It gets 4.8/5 stars on average across 193 votes, making it the 12th highest rated track on the Jukebox!

For those of us currently enduring the cold Winter weather, this is a great time to enjoy this music while sitting by a crackling wood fire. And if you’re like me, you’ve taken it a step further and you’re sitting in a room with knotted pine wall panels and rustic light fixtures that remind you of the lodge.
