Magic Behind the Music: Epcot – Future World – The Land ~ Interior Area Music (1982-2005)
As our Magic Behind the Music series continues its tour of Epcot as it was in its early years, our next stop is yet another spot that remains from the park’s opening until today: The Land pavilion. While the Land opened with Epcot on October 1, 1982, this area music track was added to the D-COT Jukebox on April 10, 2012. Believe it or not, guests and cast members listened to this music for over 20 years as they walked through the common areas of this building.
The pavilion originally opened with three attractions and two restaurants. While the space has been reimagined a couple of times, it still hosts three attractions and two restaurants, though they are all at least a little different than they used to be, if not very different. The anchor attraction here was Listen to the Land (now Living with the Land). That’s right, folks. Just like a relationship that has gone from romantic to stale over the years, we used to listen to the land, now we just live with it.
Other attractions were Kitchen Kabaret (now Soarin’ Around the World occupies this general section so no more veggie, veggie, fruit, fruit for us) and Symbiosis (now Awesome Planet). Maybe one day, we’ll get around to taking a closer look at some of these fun attractions which also have tracks in the Jukebox.
It’s nice to see that this is one place in Epcot where, even with so many changes over the decades, it still has much to offer in the way of scientific education coupled with entertainment…edutainment if you will. In dining, the pavilion opened with The Good Turn Restaurant (now the Garden Grill) and the Farmer’s Market (now Sunshine Seasons). The Land was sponsored by Kraft back then, so there were a lot of Kraft products in the food. The Good Turn wasn’t a family style or character dining experience, but the most expensive thing on the menu (the seafood kettle) wasn’t even $20! The Farmer’s Market, food-wise, was hardly a shadow of what’s there today. It had a basic selection of soup, salad, and sandwiches along with an assortment of baked goods.
Our feature track has been played a total of 13,122 times with 2 this week so far. It has become a Favorite of 96 members and Supporters have added it to 32 custom playlists. It gets a 4.5/5 average rating across 70 votes. This being our third stop in 1980’s Epcot, if you listen very closely, you might be able to hear Steve yelling from behind his computer, “When are you going to do Horizons!?” Well, as long as there’s a great big beautiful tomorrow, we’ll get there.
