Up until about a couple years ago, the only music I appreciated were the soundtracks to Disney movies. When I would visit the parks I would notice the background music when walking around, but I never really sat down and enjoyed them.
Putting together the D-CoT Portal has really opened my eyes to how much time and effort Disney puts into the guests' experience when it comes to the ambiance. What really sticks out in my mind is the Innoventions Plaza Suite soundtrack. I love walking into EPCOT and hearing the plaza loops, it really makes me feel like I'm home.
I've been collecting a lot of Disney theme park music the past few weeks and I'm amazed at how much there is! Thousands of tracks created only to be played at minimum decibel levels. The D-CoT Portal will not only serve the purpose of chatting with friends, but to have an appreciation of Disney music.
Now I don't want you to think that Disney composes all of the music played in the parks. Disney does use copyrighted music and pays the original composers their royalties. Here are some examples.
Illuminations and the attraction score to Soarin' were composed for Disney. However, the music heard in the queue to Soarin', as well as the preshow music for Illuminations, are comprised of commercially available tunes. In fact, Disney uses a lot of commercially available music (know as "needle drop" tracks) throughout the Disney resort. For example, a vast majority of the area loops at the Animal Kingdom and Disney's Hollywood Studios are all needle drop tracks as well as most of the music at the various resorts. All of the parks, at one time or another, have used needle drop loops.
My favorite area loops are Innoventions, Tower of Terror, Space Mountain and MGM's Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard. What are yours?
Side note: You can look forward to streaming all of this music in the D-CoT Portal when it's launched.
