Variety published an article from an interview with WALL-E lead character animator Angus MacLane. In the article, Angus explains the concept behind designing WALL-E and what actions he takes in certain situations.

So why does WALL-E have treads? WALL-E needed a way to move around and collect trash, so the designers gave him tank-like treads, which suggest his connection to such 20th century inventions as the bulldozer and forklift.
